Description

Vinyl:  MINT!  TOP COPY!  Appears to have never been played!  High Gloss Vinyl.  CBS/Sony Labels are Clean and Bright. This is the SUPER RARE 1969 Japanese 1ST PRESSING IMPORT of the 1967 Release!  SONX 60044.  It was not issued in Japan until this 1969 release.   One of the Greatest Greatest Hits compilations of All Time, this release is still highly regarded for not just taking in Dylan's "popular" monster hits but also being peppered with what was regarded as Dylan's popular "underground" songs like Rainy Day Women, Subterranean Homesick Blues, I Want You, Just Like A Woman, etc.  Interestingly, this record has not only the unsurpassed HOT Fidelity that you expect from a Japanese release (as well as RARE mixes as on Like A Rolling Stone, where you hear certain guitar parts as if for the first time...), this RARE release adds two additional songs:  Highway 61 Revisited and Love Minus Zero/No Limit!!!  allmusic gives it 5 stars!!

Why buy a first or early pressing and not a re-issue or a ‘re-mastered’ vinyl album?
First and early pressings are pressed from the first generation lacquers and stampers. They usually sound vastly superior to later issues/re-issues (which, in recent times, are often pressed from whatever 'best' tapes or digital sources are currently available) - many so-called 'audiophile' new 180g pressings are cut from hi-res digital sources…essentially an expensive CD pressed on vinyl.  Why  experience the worse elements of both formats?  These are just High Maintenance CDs, with mid-ranges so cloaked with a veil as to sound smeared.  They are nearly always compressed with murky transients and a general lifelessness in the overall sound.  There are exceptions where re-masters/re-presses outshine the original issues, but they are exceptions and not the norm.

First or early pressings nearly always have more immediacy, presence and dynamics. The sound staging is wider.  Subtle instrument nuances are better placed with more spacious textures. Balances are firmer in the bottom end with a far-tighter bass. Upper-mid ranges shine without harshness, and the overall depth is more immersive.  Inner details are  clearer.

On first and early pressings, the music tends to sound more ‘alive’ and vibrant.  The physics of sound energy is hard to clarify and write about from a listening perspective, but the best we can describe it is to say that you can 'hear' what the mixing and mastering engineers wanted you to hear when they first recorded the music.

Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Arriving in 1967, Greatest Hits does an excellent job of summarizing Dylan's best-known songs from his first seven albums. At just ten songs, it's a little brief, but that's actually not a bad thing, since this provides a great sampler for the curious and casual listener, as it boasts standards from "Blowin' in the Wind" to "Like a Rolling Stone." And, for collectors, the brilliant non-LP single "Positively Fourth Street" was added, which provided reason enough for anybody that already owned the original records to pick this up. As a sampler of Dylan at his absolute peak, this is first-rate material, timeless and emblematic Dylan.
