COMMENTS:  It took me a while to figure out what this variation was.  Three CBS “eyes” (instead of the two Columbia ones); cut out CBS paper “eyes” stuck over the Columbia ones on front and rear covers, and the number “7” sitting alone on the back bottom right side.  The most obvious difference was the sound: organ much further back, Bloomfield’s guitar and Dylan’s harmonica right up at the front and in your face….definitely a different mix.  It wasn’t until I came across Alan Fraser & Hans Seegers’ website that the penny dropped.  This is their take:

"Highway 61 Revisited" - mono vinyl LP, Columbia CL 2389 (Singapore/Malaysia), 1965:

Columbia CL 2389 (Singapore/Malaysia) - front photo by Chris Hood This very rare album has an imported US sleeve with no folded over flaps and the sleeve variation with "meaningless". On the rear sleeve there is a small "7" in the bottom right corner. The record has labels with the top "Columbia" logo replaced by a third CBS logo. "NONBREAKABLE" is missing from left of the centre hole. It has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - xlp-110638, Side 2 - xlp-110639.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information that the sleeves and records (without labels) were imported from the USA, while the labels with CBS logos were printed locally.

What is really interesting about this record is the mono mixes which are different from the standard U.S. mono mix. They run longer, as the stereo version does. Chris Hood thinks it sounds as if they have mixed a mono version from the stereo master. It doesn't have the harmonica intro to From A Buick 6, and Highway 61 isn't as short as the mono take with the moan by Dylan at the end. The end of Desolation Row doesn't have the laugh either. The organ sound is very light and Bloomfield's guitar stands out more than on the US stereo or mono mixes. Much of this sounds like it could be the same as a Witmark mono reel-to-reel tape from Aug 1965, see 1965. "The Bridge" issue 39, Summer 2011, lists this copy in the "Down In The Groove" section, page 97.

Thanks to Chris Hood for information and photos.

Personally, I prefer this version to any other and would have loved for this to be the form it was ultimately released in, as it has a lot more punch to it and better interment balance.  Cover has some wear, and some staining on rear cover.  Record has a few light marks and a few light crackles.  Labels are EX.  Very loath to part with this as it is truly unique.

PLEASE NOTE: I am being forced to sell off much of my own personal collection of rare lps and 45s, as well as high-end stereo equipment due to contamination of all my shop stock by a third-party, which has temporarily put me out of business.  In order to maintain the continuation of The Velvet Fog, I must let much of my private stock go until this matter is finally resolved.
