In mid-1965, Columbia records – probably as a means of testing the waters in the wake of Dylan’s disastrous Newport Jazz & Blues Festival appearance with the Butterfield Blues Band – scheduled a release of a 45 single to see if the next Dylan album (Highway 61 Revisited), which was significantly more “electrified” than his previous work (Bringing it all back home)  would fare well with the general public. The single was to have ‘Can you please crawl out of your window’ on side A and ‘From the Buick Six’ (rare version, with harmonica intro’ on side B.  The A side was later successfully covered by both Jimi Hendrix AND The Band.

Alas, it wasn’t to be. Columbia got cold feet – probably stung by the extremely hostile reaction to the Dylan’s new sound – and withdrew the single. Instead, a new version of the single, with the glorious ‘Positively 4th Street” replaced the previously scheduled ‘Can you please crawl out of your window’ on side A (side B remain unchanged). To be sure, in hindsight, it is easy to say that Columbia made a right decision, because the replacement track is one of Dylan’s all-time greatest masterworks, although both “Positively” and “Crawl” have a very similar sound and feel.

But then, something strange happened. A small batch of previously ALREADY pressed discs containing “Crawl out of your window’– but with mislabeled side A, incorrectly identifying the track as ‘Positively 4th Street’ - somehow trickled to the market.  There is absolutely nothing on the disc – either the picture sleeve or the labels – that would indicate that the disc contains ‘Can you please crawl out of your window’, and the record must be played to identify which version it is.  I guess someone at Columbia’s  distributors didn’t receive the memo that the first version of the disc been scuttled by the label’s management, and went ahead with the release, anyway – but with the sloppily mismatched and deceptive sleeves and labels, thus creating one of the rarest Dylan mispressings and rarities in the hobby.

·       45-RPM SINGLE RECORD:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted below, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the normal room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE RECORD AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those singles that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mispressed version of this 45 single is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(d)          Stereo copies of this 45 single are NOT known to exist.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       PICTURE SLEEVE

THE PICTURE SLEEVE IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the sleeve:

-        Sleeve has a few visible wrinkles along the seams

-         Sleeve has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Sleeve has a small price stamp on the front panel

-         Sleeve shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE SLEEVE:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
