"COMMAND PERFORMANCE U.S.A, the greatest entertainers in America as requested by you, the men and women in the United States Armed Forces throughout the world! COMMAND PERFORMANCE - presented this week and every week 'til it's over, over there!"
And here's a very enjoyable original WAR DEPARTMENT RADIO PROGRAM TRANSCRIPTION DISC containing a complete 30-minute episode of the most famous WWII armed forces radio series, "COMMAND PERFORMANCE".
This is program #92 for November 13, 1943 and features announcer KEN CARPENTER, Master of Ceremonies BOB HOPE, THE CHARIOTEERS, BETTY HUTTON, LANA TURNER, JIMMY DURANTE and JUDY GARLAND. It's a famous episode, having been filmed for the newsreels of the day.
Program highlights are:
- BOB HOPE does a comedy monologue
- THE CHARIOTEERS quartet sings a spirited version of "Ride"
- A jive-talking BETTY HUTTON exuberantly sings "Murder, He Said"
- In a very famous bit requested by a serviceman, LANA TURNER fries a 3-inch thick Porterhouse Steak which is brought in by armed guards.
- JIMMY DURANTE and BOB HOPE do a bit together (this starts Side Two, and the skip issue mentioned below affects the beginning of it)
- JIMMY DURANTE sings "You've Got To Start Off Each Day With A Song", with usual comic interludes
- "Sweater Girl" JUDY GARLAND and BOB HOPE do love scenes, with Bob impersonating Charles Boyer, Jimmy Cagney.
- JUDY GARLAND sings "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard Of Oz"
- BOB HOPE closes with "Thanks For The Memory"
This is an original 16" WAR DEPARTMENT disc, issued to AFRS radio stations and it's in a protective sleeve.
The disc is uncracked, but there's a slight warp at one point of the outside edge - this causes some skipping in the first 1/2" of the recorded portion even though the recorded band isn't damaged. I use a very light tone arm; this might not be an issue with a more professional turntable. There's some surface noice and crackling throughout the recording. For safety, this one needs to be shipped in a box.
See scans of the labels for both sides of the disc. There are a few minor skips just before Judy sings (other than those noted above), but the song is not affected. No deep scratches. A good cleaning and the right needle would probably correct these issues.
