Collaboration between The Wailers and Lee "Scratch" Perry lasted not very long, but it's the absolute zenith of Jamaican music. "Soul Rebels" is the only full length album recorded by the Marley's Wailers with Perry's producing, however some important non-album singles gathered on "African Herbsman" compilation. These records are much more important for evolution of reggae, than any other Bob Marley's album. The pure reggae in it's native form, not twisted and deformed by multinational labels touch.
Most people got their knowledge of reggae from Marley's "Legends" or "Exodus" albums. They are good, but it's not enough. If you're familar with the first major label releases of the Wailers (such as "Catch a Fire" or "Burning") then you're not hopeless for sure. But it's not enough too. In many ways "Soul Rebels" is the strongest album by Bob Marley & Co, it's a true original form of the reggae - powerful, sunny, raw and innocent. Maybe it's not the crime to miss it, however it's a crime to ignore it consciously.
