Since last June, Golden Pavilion have been steadily releasing rare 60s and 70s titles on vinyl, mostly sourced from European labels and specialising in that fairly broad arc of progressive, art-house rock and folk. One in a latest batch is Bob Theil’s 1982 private pressing, … So Far, which has sporadically resurfaced on CD or vinyl in Canada, Spain and Japan in more recent times. This edition comes with an even rarer five-track EP, Another Flight, which pre-dates the album by two years.
Today, Theil’s lyrics – very much in the reflective Michael Chapman school – and his commanding 12-string guitar are decidedly in vogue. This certainly wasn’t the case 30 years ago, when even established singer-songwriters such as Roy Harper and Bert Jansch (to whom Theil might justly be compared) were finding it tough.
The Scottish-born Theill, who has since lived and worked mostly in Holland, recorded … So Far in London with musicians including Marc Brzezicki (now with Procol Harum) and James Litherland (a mainstay of Colloseum). Of the more band-oriented songs some, such as One Day, Today Or Tomorrow, have a distinct pastoral Floyd flavour with the kind of guitar flourishes Dave Gilmour probably wouldn’t disown. Thankfully, … So Far isn’t one of those Holy Grail items that you finally get to hear and wonder: why all the fuss?
