There is only a few short years between Tommy Chong being the song-writing guitarist with Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, and being half of the stoner comedy duo Cheech & Chong.
Their Lp, released in July of 1968 via Gordy Records (part of Motown) was the high point for Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers. They were discovered when Berry Gordy Jr., President of Motown Record Corporation, and Diana Ross and the Supremes went to see the group at the Elegant Parlor in Vancouver, British Columbia. Extremely impressed, Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers were immediately signed with Motown.
Their big hit single "Does Your Mama Know About Me", set the pace, written by guitarist Tommy Chong and Tom Baird. Bobby Taylor possesses an extraordinary voice with fine textural range that can project throbbing blues, R&B, pop or ballads. Wes Henderson, Tommy Chong and Eddie Patterson do their share of beautiful interplay in the vocal background as they accompany on guitar. Robbie King is the organist and Ted Lewis on drums.
This one was recorded on October 18, 1969 but wasn’t released until 1970 as this V.I.P. single. The song “BLACKMAIL” is on the topside, and on the flip you’ll hear “Oh, I’ve Been Blessed.” This is a stock pressing on V.I.P. Records.
