Recorded live in Los Angeles in February 2025, Ghosts Of American Psychonauts finds Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy) reimagining some of his most loved songs, aided and abetted by a stellar cast of musicians. For this show he was joined by tour regulars Jacob Duncan and Thomas Deakin and a full band, giving these arrangements a full, almost cinematic feel. Those familiar with Bonnie Prince Billy will know that his material seems to be in a constant state of flux, often changing shape and meaning with every performance. That's the case here, and the fact that this show was recorded in the aftermath of the California wildfires gives the likes of 'Trees Of Hell' a context that is haunted, mournful and at times quite terrifying. There's chaos in the swirling saxophones of Patrick Shiroishi and Jacob Duncan, whilst the repetitive guitar pattern evokes an impending, unstoppable force of ill intent. It's a breathtaking performance that causes the hairs on the back of the neck to stand up and say their prayers. The set closes with Oldham's most celebrated song, 'I See A Darkness', a song that both embraces depression and offers support and hope. It's a stunning performance that simply bursts with poignancy and palpable passion. A fitting end to a set of perfectly reimagined songs that, rather than withering on the vine, have been given a new lease of life with Ghosts Of American Psychonauts.
