Eleven tracks clocking in at a smidge over 30 minutes is scarcely over-doing things, even by the standards of the day, yet within this half-hour we have a colourful and varied plate of the band’s tasty morsels.

The title track lays out the bill of fare in the opening moments. A descending double-tracked guitar figure is followed by a drum-crack announcement that a vamping organ, jumping bass and rolling hit-on-the-third percussion are inviting you to the table. The leader picks out the melody before another chorus, then Cropper drops in one of his economic cool-as-fuck solos and the band reconvene to vamp us out with some by-play between Jones and Cropper. It’s all over in 2’25” and is the basic recipe for most of this upbeat, good time jiving. Second piece “Soul sanction” is possibly even better.

Not that it’s all mid-paced groove. The band throw in some covers, including The Young Rascals “Groovin’” and two popular ballads, in addition to six band originals. Not having the benefit of a vocalist to reach out and grab listeners, Booker T & the MGs include these to provide recognition and perhaps an entry point for those less familiar with R&B instrumentals.

The ropey ballad “More”, for example, begins like something Andre Kostelanetz would arrange for mums and dads, yet builds nicely to a chugging chorus quietly stripping back the schmaltz so that by the conclusion you’ve forgotten how you rolled your eyes at the cheesy opening. The pulsing “Double or nothing” continues with an almost rocking boogie groove and a fine little Cropper solo. “Pygmy” is a soul-fossa groove enlivened by Jackson’s brilliant off-the-beat drumming and a neat Cropper solo. A personal fave is the piano-lead organ blues (true!) of “Slim Jenkins’ Place”

The title of “Carnaby Street” certainly seems to support the hypothesis that Booker and the band were keen to extend their audience. It’s melodic and quite romantic; the sort of tune you can imagine humming as you sit on a sunny door-step watching lissom London chicks sashay down the famous fashion street on a summer’s day in ’67.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Still riding high years after the success of "Green Onions," Hip Hug-Her is another 11-song solid session of Southern soul delivered by one of the best bands in the business. In an attempt to appeal to the up-and-coming mod movement, the cover features an alluring model flanked by fashionable faceless people. But not to judge the album by its cover, Hip Hug-Her finds the group diving deeper into soulful territories, no doubt aided by the addition of bassist Duck Dunn to the fold. The title track is clearly one of the stronger cuts on the album, but other tunes such as the midtempo Motown anthem "Get Ready" and the group's interpretation of "Groovin'" make this one of the strongest full-lengths in the Booker T. & the MG's catalog.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY ROB THEAKSTON, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

This is the next-to-the-last of the great, classic, STAX soul instrumental albums Booker T & the MG's recorded for the legendary label. Following their next ('Doing their thing') release, Stax would terminate its distribution deal with Atlantic records and sign up with Gulf+Western, after which things would never be the same - for the performers AND for the label. Although Booker T's would go on to record many other, more commercially successful albums (some of which were truly great, such as 1971 "Melting Pot") the revolutionary phase of their input, during which they mixed funk, jazz, R&B, soul and organ swing in a seamless mix, and provided backbone to a slew of Blues and Soul artists pretty much ended with this album. Starting with the next album, Booker T's switched to a much more commercial, poppy sound and focused almost completely on doing covers of other people's tunes. This album includes two heretofore greatest hits of their career: the oft-sampled title track, plus the heavy, funky, "Slim Jenkins' Place".  Track listing: Hip hug-her --- Soul Sanction --- Get Ready --- More --- Double or nothing --- Carnaby Street --- Slim Jenkins' Place --- Pigmy --- Groovin' --- Booker's notion - Sunny.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 6:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
