Description
"Ladles of fuzz is what we're hearing here" writes Fuzz Acid and Flowers, the exhaustive document on rare 1960's singles, about this one, and for once they're right. This is a very rare (believe me, I searched for years) heavy fuzz psych tour de force from Gary, Indiana's BRAND X "Come On Home" b/w "Stop! In the Name of Love" on the Steel Breeze label, presumably from some time in the late 60's. Phil Collins fans, hit your BACK button now - this is NOT the jazz-rock fusion band we have here - but lovers of garage psych, listen closely. "Come On Home" hits hard from the start and never lets up - this one opens up with some LOUD explosions of fuzz guitar and then quickly settles into a sinister, evil and HEAVY acid psych groove with lots of doomy Hammond organ, waspy fuzz licks and thrashing drums. Just the way you like 'em. They keep the hard rock fans happy with the wall of electric sound, and the psych heads satisfied with some trippy unexpected chord changes. Plus the whole thing is very well produced so every nuance is captured perfectly, and the whole thing, appropriately, is mixed so LOUD it pops out of your speakers in full battle armor, ready to beat the nearest Little River Band fan into bloody submission. The flipside, as you may have already guessed, is a Motown cover, done in that prevalent sludgy, heavy Vanilla Fudge style that was popular exactly one second after the Fudge topped the charts in 1968. Thankfully, it's pretty good, with quite a bit of white boy Indiana soul, and the boys are not at all shy about unholstering that wicked loud fuzz guitar when it's needed. As an interesting note, "Come on Home" was written by "Grebb-Cetera-Davis" - and yes, that's THE Peter Cetera of Chicago who wrote the song with his bandmates Kal David and Marty Grebb of the Exceptions. Original late 60's pressing on the Steel Breeze label. Vinyl plays VG+ with some surface noise, all of which is drowned out completely when the barrage of music (and fuzz) begins.
