OPERATOR – Brenda Holloway (1965/UK Tamla Motown)

Californian soul singer Brenda recorded for various labels in the early Sixties with no success but was soon snapped up by Berry Gordy’s Motown stable. Her first single for Tamla was ‘Every Little Bit Hurts’ in 1964 and was a huge American hit, climbing to No. 3 on the R&B chart. The following year she teamed up with Smokey Robinson who wrote and produced the immaculate ‘When I’m Gone’. ‘Operator’ was the follow-up to that classic and was the 19th release on the newly formed British label: Tamla Motown. Originally the song was a B-side for Mary Wells in 1962. This is a collectable stock copy and also has a wonderful B-side as well – another Smokey tune called ‘I’ll Be Available’. Brenda gained great exposure accompanying The Beatles on their second US tour. Although lesser known, her sister Patrice Holloway has also made some decent soul tunes.
