Label/Format: United Artists – a rare original on the seldom-seen maroon and orange format design. These have matt and ever-so-slightly textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both clean, still quite fresh and attractive. Side one has moderate+ spindle marks and side two more light+. On this somewhat unreliable evidence, it may suggest quite a number of plays, but as I have stated many times before, many owners used the label as a guide for hole location. Hence on even one play where alignment proved ‘stubborn’, many spindle marks could accrue. Even with some light surface marks on the playing surfaces, this record plays incredibly well with very little unwanted at all – a little to my surprise being honest. With most of my records being allowed to be played prior to my purchase for offering, this easily passed the audio test. No hesitation offering this quite scarce first issue on a very collectable label even with relatively light cosmetic blemishes or cover wear.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. Quite a good weight for this label.

Rarity: Scarce: not a major seller even with the hype prior to issue. Also this format of the United Artists label was brief with modest numbers pressed on it. As many rock collectors will know for example, Can’s ‘Monster Movie’ was initially pressed on this label, but now is considered rare. Most seen are on the more familiar cream and brown format.

Brief Info: Formely known as Kippington Lodge, this was recorded under the new name taken from the band’s guitarist. Issued with plenty of hype and many consider this failed to live up to it. Often labelled as a ‘pub rock’ band, a shortish-lived craze of the 1970s against large gig arenas and more ‘progressive’ acts. This debut, for me anyway, is their best with some elements prior to that scene. It blends CSN, Dylan, Buffalo Springfield and The Band sounds. So probably cannot be said to be overly original, but I like it being a fan of all the aforementioned. The cover is a colourful and fragile piece, also unusual in the fact it was designed by Barney Bubbles for his short-lived graphic art company ‘Teenburger Designs’. This a highly respectable example with most wear on the top edge (clearly used for storage due the fact the spine text is inverted). It also includes the lyric insert sheet, that had a tear which I have repairs as neatly as I could, never seen this insert before. The record plays very well indeed and I enjoyed my play-grade. So not for the perfectionists cosmetically, but if sound and first-issue rarity are important, this could still take some beating.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated, matt gatefold format with all surfaces quite heavily textured. The card fairly soft and highly prone to all forms of wear. Printed and made in England (uncredited), this includes the one-sided lyric sheet.

Cover Front: A quite unmissable front with all colours of the rainbow on display. This in lovely condition given just how fragile it is. Just a tiny chip near the top edge towards the right and a little tip rubbing on the left corners. Clean, fresh and hugely attractive with no speckle (rubbing to the raised areas of the texturing), rubbing and barely any creasing. As mentioned above, the design from the short-lived company Teenburger Designs, this front will take an immense amount of beating.

Cover Back: The back very similar with any small wear near the very edges and corner tips. The lack of ringwear is massive plus along with barely any creasing, rubbing or grubbiness.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely anything to fault inside which is also has the same finish texturing. Never seen a cover made with ‘V’ cuts to the bottom off the folds, this probably done to stop the stressing on the thick spine.

Top Edges: This I am certain was stored on these edges to allow the spine to be ‘right-reading’ as the text is inverted opposite way to standard. They have rubbing and a central split on the back I repaired as neatly as I could to stop the risk of it widening in the future. This the only reason why a higher grading was not considered. So in other words, the main areas of this cover all look better than my overall grading.

Bottom Edges: The bottom edges have less rubbing than the top and no splits, any wear is more patchy. The end panels have very gently thickened.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine that has somewhat defied the odds. Mainly solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Just a small rub to the very top corner with the last letter of the title lost. All other text is fully intact and practically unworn, as is the main surface, and even the fold hinges themselves. Such covers areas on these types will actually have less wear on these more vulnerable areas.

Corners: The tips have mostly moderate rubbing, soft covers get this – fact – and seldom seen without. Fair to very fine (or inbetween) shape retained.

Cover Summary: Even with some edge wear, main on the top, this is still a strong all-round example of this very fragile early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. The main areas e.g. front, back, inside, spine and entrance edge are all impressive as I hope my pictures show. I think this will please many collectors, but not the perfectionists – good luck trying to find a ‘perfect’ one of these.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white solid unlined inner that has aged little. One corner crease, generally clean with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: purely a subjective opinion as this has little to fault bar a careful repair to a tear near the bottom – I did this myself, and this went as well as I think possible. In fact the front is now very neat. The song lyrics with a graphic are printed one side only on textured paper and this still looks attractive.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): the record has numerous, but mainly fine and light surface marks as seen under bright angled light. But no penetrating scratches, hence this record, which appears possibly played several times, still plays with clean and impressive sound with very little to fault at all. Well pressed and one of the earliest you will find. Visually a fine record that should please many collectors, but like the cover, not for the purists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce first issue album plays with better than excellent sound and above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Even with the fine surface marks, few available copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. This truly exceeded my expectation and nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this record. Again, if could prove difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
