BROADWAY RARITY! JOHNNY MERCER’S “FOXY” MUSICAL BACKERS DEMO ALBUM LP (VG)!!
1964’s “Foxy” was one of Broadway’s most notorious musical flops despite the fact that it featured Bert Lahr, the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz,” lyrics by Johnny Mercer, and being produced by hitmaker David Merrick. What went wrong? First, it debuted in the Yukon in 1963, not on Broadway, but in the Yukon because the plot was set there. Sounds logical, but nobody came to that remote location. Then a year later it came to Broadway with a revised book and added songs, and gathered favorable notices, but Merrick closed it anyway after 64 performances. Why? Because he could, because he was David Merrick. No official commercial Original Cast album was released, but we have the LP that was sent to prospective backers to raise funds for the show before it debuted.
PLEASE NOTE: this album featuring songs from the musical on both sides in Very Good (VG) condition does NOT have Bert Lahr, Larry Blyden, John Davidson, or any of the stars of the Broadway musical. Instead, it features studio session singers. There is also an original letter enclosed from 1971, sent from Marshall Robbins of Commander Publications to "Don". See pix for details!
