Bruce Springsteen had become increasingly downcast as a songwriter during his recording career, and his pessimism bottomed out with Nebraska . But Born in the U.S.A., his popular triumph, which threw off seven Top Ten hits and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, trafficked in much the same struggle, albeit set to galloping rhythms and set off by chiming guitars. That the witless wonders of the Reagan regime attempted to co-opt the title track as an election-year campaign song wasn't so surprising: the verses described the disenfranchisement of a lower-class Vietnam vet, and the chorus was intended to be angry, but it came off as anthemic. Then, too, Springsteen had softened his message with nostalgia and sentimentality, and those are always crowd-pleasers. "Glory Days" may have employed Springsteen's trademark disaffection, yet it came across as a couch potato's drunken lament. But more than anything else, Born in the U.S.A. marked the first time that Springsteen's characters really seemed to relish the fight and to have something to fight for. They were not defeated ("No Surrender"), and they had friendship ("Bobby Jean") and family ("My Hometown") to defend. The restless hero of "Dancing in the Dark" even pledged himself in the face of futility, and for Springsteen, that was a step. The "romantic young boys" of his first two albums, chastened by "the working life" encountered on his third, fourth, and fifth albums and having faced the despair of his sixth, were still alive on this, his seventh, with their sense of humor and their determination intact. If Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band were a playground basketball team they'd be the one made up of local legends that don't have as much spring in their legs as the young bucks, but get by on guts and guile. Culled from the two Madison Square Garden shows that closed out the revived E Street Band's 1999-2000 road show, this 20-song collection deftly entwines fan favorites with fresher material, including two new offerings, the stately "Land of Hope and Dreams" and the solemn "American Skin"--the latter prompted by the shooting of unarmed New Yorker Amadou Diallo by police officers.

When Springsteen and company (including both Miami Steve Van Zandt and his successor, Nils Lofgren, on guitar) look back, they temper the force of the original arrangements with ingenuity and a sense of spacing. The E Street Band in their heyday may have served up four-hour marathons, but they felt stopwatch-tight. Here Springsteen reconciles his rocker and reflective sides as "The River" curves along through a serpentine course, "Mansion on the Hill" is given a curious (albeit lovely) Hawaiian treatment, and "Born in the U.S.A." resurfaces as a deep-blues lament.

The gang can still muster a take-no-prisoners attack, as witnessed by the hard-charging likes of "Two Hearts" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out”./

DREAM BABY DREAM - 10" SINGLE - "Hardly the sort of cover you'd expect from the great man, but Bruce Springsteen's take on Suicide's 'Dream Baby Dream' is something very special. He'd close every night on his Devils & Dust tour with a version of this song – a repetitive and mesmeric lullaby of a thing, far away from the wordy, narrative pieces you'd associate with pared down Springsteen sets. If you look a little further back into his career, outside of the E Street Band, there are further traces of the Rev/Vega influence, chiefly in that Nebraska's 'State Trooper' owes much to 'Frankie Teardrop' in its oddly motorik, minimal rock & roll assemblage. Using only a looping organ figure with a little synthesizer to fill in the cracks, Springsteen keeps his arrangement of 'Dream Baby Dream' true to the spirit of the original, channeling vocals into the Roy Orbison-like shape that had characterized his delivery circa twenty years ago…To make a fair comparison between this and the original, the B-side begins with a previously unreleased Suicide performance, recorded for an NBC TV broadcast in 1979. Vega is in fine voice and the strange, snarling aloofness of it all is very much at odds with what goes down on the A. Finally, disbanded New York outfit Beat The Devil complete the EP with a hard rocking version of 'Mr Ray,' which is all good and well, but is inevitably overshadowed by the two tracks that came before it. LUCKY TOWN - TREMENDOUSLY RARE VINYL LP PRESSING - LONG OUT OF PRINT -  This is one of Bruce's most underrated LP'S. It's the first album in many years where he didn't sound as if he was struggling with inner demons. The opening song, "Better Days," certainly makes this point in a forthright way. In addition, the title track rocks, "If I Should Fall Behind" is one of the Boss' most beautiful songs, and "Leap of Faith" uses biblical metaphors to describe the start of a delightful relationship. I also like the darker numbers "Souls of the Departed" and "The Big Muddy." But generally speaking, this is a sweet snapshot of secure love, in contrast to the collapsing romances depicted on Bruce's earlier album, The Tunnel of Love. Don't hesitate to pick it up.
