ARCHIVAL OVERVIEW
Up for auction is an exceptionally scarce grail piece for classical symphonic collectors and analog purists: an authentic Speakers Corner Records factory test pressing/sample sleeve copy of the legendary 1958 stereo recording of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, op. 55 ("Eroica"), performed by Bruno Walter and his handpicked Columbia Symphony Orchestra.
This rare piece features the official, original Speakers Corner production data sheet permanently affixed to the reverse side of the jacket. Prepared inside their German headquarters in anticipation of the May 2017 master release window, it outlines critical matrix tracking information, price codes, and recording provenance documenting the historic January 1958 sessions captured at Legion Hall in Hollywood.
Because test pressings represent the absolute first stampers pulled directly from the fresh matrix to evaluate audio integrity before commercial factory runs, they hold a revered place among high-fidelity collectors. They represent the absolute closest possible physical replication of the original master tape.
REPERTOIRE & PERFORMANCE NOTES
Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony is a monumental milestone in music history, showcasing a daring experiment with musical form and content that charted a "new path" away from classical constraints into the romantic era. To truly appreciate the breathtaking leaps made in early stereo recording technology during the late 1950s, one can do no better than this definitive rendition.
Bruno Walter approaches the heroic, revolutionary score with a deeply detailed and beautifully balanced perspective. Rather than relying on sudden, jarring contrasts, Walter focuses on exposing the incredible wealth of differing styles, rich textures, and tonalities hidden within the score. His finely chiselled rendition of passages for small ensembles presents the symphonic work with an unheard-of depth, warmth, and ambient amplitude that laid the groundwork for today's search for the ultimate original analog sound.
