BRUTE FORCE AND HIS DRUM (JOHN J. FRANCIS)
"Weird and Wonderful" b/w " Strange"
Original 7" 45rpm , Copperfield label CS-50003, released 1974. Australian pressing in company sleeve.
John J. Francis was an Australian acclaimed singer/songwriter who came to national prominence during the early 1970s. His music tends to defy classification - everything from folk/psych to synth electronica! He is probably best remembered for his contribution of the song "Simple Ben" to the legendary Australian surf movie Morning Of The Earth. It joined the film in becoming an Oz classic and is still remembered as a surfing anthem. The soundtrack to the film went gold, the first surf movie to ever achieve this feat.
Francis managed the independent Copperfield Sound Studio in Sydney between 1970-74 and also did 95% of all the sound engineer/production work that happened there, including his own material. Between 1972 and 1974 he released four albums Rock n Roll Refugee; Breaks, Works and Thoughts ; Open Fist and Wassa Matta under his own name. He also teamed up with drummer Jimmy Yonge and they put down a number of one take, very adlib tracks --- all very strange!!! and released these under the name "Brute Force and His Drum". Because of the non-commercial nature of these tracks, they received virtually no air-play and disappeared not long after they were released.
The 45 single up for auction consists of two of the above tracks recorded with Jimmy Yonge under the pseudonym "Brute Force And Drum". Entitled "Weird and Wonderful" and "Strange" they are very appropriately named . Both tracks are characterised by drum/percussion & bass beats with riff based synth lines and strange vocal talk & snippets (including some evil laughter & screams at times). Bizarre stuff.

Labels are very clean with no writing , stickers or marks
