Buckshot LeFonque's Music Evolution is a lively second and final statement from Branford Marsalis' genre-blurring project that collides jazz, hip-hop, r&b and rock. There is a real experimental spirit to it that intrigues throughout, as jazz musicianship and fresh rhythms provide a foundation for a broad palette of guest appearances. Guru adds a hip-hop edge that you would expect, while David Sanborn contributes saxophone and legendary Matrix actor Laurence Fishburne also appears among the collaborators. The record's fusion is always energetic and reflects Marsalis' willingness to push beyond traditional boundaries, although tracks such as 'Another Day' also demonstrate its accessible side. That single reached No. 65 in the UK charts in December 1997 and is still hella catchy.
