Description
This US 20 Feb 1958 release was an opportunity to get copies of Buddy’s first 2 American singles on one convenient EP release. All 4 songs were arranged by Buddy and have been covered by many artists since including Bobby Vee, The Searchers, Blondie and Don McLean. These recordings were first issued as 45/78 RPM Coral singles: Peggy Sue b/w Every Day Coral 9-61885 on 20 Sep 1957 and Listen To Me b/w I’m Gonna Love You Too Coral 9-61947 on 5 Feb 1958. Buddy Holy is on vocals/lead guitar and supported by Joe Mauldin [double bass], Jerry Allison [drums] and Nikki Sullivan [rhythm guitar on Coral 9-61947]. This EP did not sell particularly well in the US at first so comparatively few copies were made until the early ‘60s. By then, the original stampers had been replaced. So this 1st pressing with matrices “S3952 1” and “S3953 1” is arguably the most collectable of Buddy Holly’s US-issued EPs. This highly sought after collector’s item is complimented with an accurate “no glasses” repro sleeve with the same 2-layer paper/cardboard construction used by Coral Records in the mid 1950s.

This 7 inch 45 RPM EP record is the first US pressing. The UK equivalent was Coral FEP 2002, which has a dull sound in comparison with this US pressing. The latter was made using Norman Petty’s original session tapes rather than the exported 2nd or 3rd generation copies that were supplied to foreign markets including the UK. The listening experience is wonderfully clear compared with anything issued since. Buddy never sounded better than he does on this EP.
