"I'm Gonna Love You Too" was first heard as Buddy Holly's follow-up single to his gold-selling Top Ten hit "Peggy Sue," released by Coral Records on February 5, 1958. The song is credited to Joe B. Mauldin, Holly's bass player; Norman Petty, his producer; and Nikki Sullivan, his sometime rhythm guitarist (who was not heard on the recording). There have long been questions about the songwriting credits assigned to the original songs Holly recorded, and Jerry Allison, his drummer, has gone on record stating that "I'm Gonna Love You Too" actually was written primarily by Holly, with Allison composing the bridge. Certainly the song sounds characteristic of the man who wrote "That'll Be the Day." It is another up-tempo number with an infectious tune and boastful lyrics that only thinly veil heartbreak. In "That'll Be the Day," Holly borrowed the sarcastic John Wayne line from the movie The Searchers to scoff at his girlfriend's attempts to break off with him. In "I'm Gonna Love You Too," he boldly declares that, even though she has been taken by "another fella," she is going to come back someday anyway. Recorded on July 1, 1957, the Holly version of "I'm Gonna Love You Too" is notable for the genesis of an apocryphal story about how the band name the Crickets came about (a version presented with modifications in the almost completely fictional film The Buddy Holly Story). During the recording session, the musicians -- Holly, Mauldin, and Allison -- and Petty heard the sound of a cricket apparently hiding in the echo chamber they were using to produce a double-tracked vocal effect. They were unable to locate and dispose of the cricket, but since it chirped along on the beat, they ended up leaving it on the track. (It can be heard at the end of the fade-out.) Supposedly, this was what inspired the band name; actually, the group already was called the Crickets, having released "That'll Be the Day" under that name more than a month earlier. In a record company sleight of hand, Holly's recordings were released under two different labels and two different names simultaneously. Through the Decca Records subsidiary Brunswick he released records such as "That'll Be the Day" as the Crickets, while other records, such as "Peggy Sue," were released on another Decca subsidiary, Coral Records, as by Buddy Holly. When those two records (the release dates for which were separated by four months) both became hits, Decca began flooding the market with Holly and Crickets releases, thus diluting the success of any individual record. "Peggy Sue" (by Holly) and "Oh, Boy!" (by the Crickets) were still high in the charts when Coral released "I'm Gonna Love You Too," and the following week Brunswick put out "Maybe Baby." The glut probably prevented "I'm Gonna Love You Too" from being the hit it could have been, though it made at least one of the best-seller charts briefly. It also appeared as the leadoff track on the album Buddy Holly, released on February 20, 1958. Of course, Holly was a major influence on the British groups of the early '60s, and in the fall of 1964 the Hullaballoos, a bleach-blond quartet of Englishmen, released a cover of "I'm Gonna Love You Too" that got halfway up the American singles charts. The next notable recording came with the release of The Buddy Holly Story in the summer of 1978; whatever flaws the screenplay may have had, Gary Busey's Oscar-nominated portrayal of Holly contained some exciting performances of the singer's songs, and one of those was "I'm Gonna Love You Too," which, of course, turned up on the charting soundtrack album. An even more prominent cover the same year was the revved-up version cut by new wave act Blondie and included on their Top Ten, million-selling album Parallel Lines. Nevertheless, "I'm Gonna Love You Too" remains an underrated title in the Buddy Holly catalog.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY WILLIAM RUHLMAN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Among the  early Rock and Rockabilly singles, this one truly and literally stands out as a  Giant: a Rock’n’Roll classic if ever we saw one. We consider the B-side of this single ("Listen to Me") to be the finest Buddy Holly song and one of Rock's greatest achievements.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.
