At least 10 of the 11 songs on this LP (the one exception being the ballad "Girl On My Mind") have aged as well as anything that Holly ever recorded. "Rock Around With Ollie Vee", "Blue Days — Black Nights", "Ting-A-Ling", "I'm Changing All Those Changes", "Modern Don Juan", "Love Me", "Don't Come Back Knockin' ", and "Midnight Shift" are all decent, solid early rock 'n' roll; he sounds too countrified by about half on much of the record, especially on the early version of "That'll Be The Day", but these were not bad records, even if they weren't going to break his talent out to a mass audience. What's more, at least at the time of his first sessions in January of 1956, few white artists and even fewer producers at major labels had yet figured out what mix of country, r&b, and blues worked on a rock 'n' roll record. Given all of this, this is a better than decent album with one real gem ("Rock Around With Ollie Vee", and if not for the fact that they mostly feature a completely different lineup of musicians and were also contractually separate from the rest of his eventual output for Coral/Brunswick/Decca, roughly half of the songs here could have been filtered into either of Holly's later official LPs without doing any violence to the newer material. Even the ballad "You Are My One Desire" — though it doesn't really resemble much else that Holly ever did — is given a hauntingly passionate performance. That'll Be The Day isn't a revelatory piece of rock 'n' roll history, but it's a more substantial and enjoyable prelude to the main body of Holly's career than it's usually given credit for being, extending his serious legacy backward a full album. [In 1967, Decca Records reissued That'll Be The Day as The Great Buddy Holly, with a new cover and stripping off the song "Ting-A-Ling"].

DECCA'S PINK LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).
(c) This is the original flat edge pressing.
(d) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(e) The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(f) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart (THE FAKE STEREO PRESSING IS A 1967 PRESSING ON DECCA’S VOCALION BUDGET LABEL, WITH A DIFFERENT TITLE AND COVER). We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 50:1.
(g) Pink label promo version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.
(h) True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.
(i) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
