Budgie : Budgie 1L / 1L 1st Press Red / Pink 'Dogbone' Label 1971
This classic first pressing plays with superb audio on both sides with hardly any intrusion. There is just one static clicky sound on S1 and a handful of minor statics on s2 but overall the clarity, depth and power of the audio is stunning. Even the two quieter tracks 'Everything In My Heart' and 'You And I' play without any interference. I have graded three out of four tracks on S2 as Near Mint but even then the vast majority does indeed play with impeccable quality. The vinyl has been so well preserved and has clearly not been played very much, it is probably the 'cleanest' first pressing I have ever seen.
That also applies to the unlaminated cover which remains in great condition with no marking and just some creasing in the top right corner, the photo actually makes it look worse than it is! The inner sleeve is in excellent condition also with only some creasing.
This first pressing of course has the red / pink 'dog bone' labels and the 1L / 1L matrix. It is easily one of the earlier ones as it has a single A stamper on each side.

Visual description
The vinyl is in lovely condition still has a superb glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can only see some very faint hairlines and 3/4 minor 'specks' and there is nothing that stands out. It has the finest example I have seen in a long time. There is no groove wear wear or 'bag rash' and the run out grooves have only light marking, you can still easily read the matrix info. The red / pink 'dogbone' labels are in superb shape with hardly any spindle wear.
Play grading
The intro on 'Guts' plays so clearly with barely any static and as Philips and Shelley join in the audio is perfect. The opening vocal has no intrusion and the second verse is just as strong and clear. The instrumental section that follows can only be described 'as new' and already you can tell this vinyl has been so well looked after. What you look for with any vinyl from this era is how much of the original sonic quality is still there and I can tell you it is here in abundance! The power and depth of the audio is stunning - it has that typical deep, rich, strong Budgie sound. It continues in the same way right through to the very end and this is easily a Mint- start to this classic debut album.
'Everything In My Heart' plays beautifully with a clarity that cannot be faulted. From start to finish there is not so much as a dust tick and Mint is an easy grade to give. Not bad for a quiet acoustic number!
The quiet two minute intro / vocal on 'The Author' has just one static clicky sound after 30 seconds and a couple of minor statics. Aside from that it plays with great clarity and barely any background. Bourge's first classic riff section is stunning, the power and depth could not be any more impressive. Shelley's high octane vocal lends itself perfectly to their 'sound' as does his deep bass sound and both 'play' with exceptional quality here. The mid instrumental is phenomenal and there is no distortion on the top end. Philips' percussion is so strong and dynamic and the final vocal is flawless. I will grade the intro as Ex+ but the rest is Mint without doubt, a superb version.
The intro on the classic 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' is so clean with barely any static and any you do hear is so damn quiet! As the volume increases the playback is 'as new' and Shelley's opening vocal is equal to that. The following brief instrumental has a couple of barely audible statics at the beginning and the next vocal is as good as the first. From then on it plays with outstanding sonic quality and as that first classic up-tempo riff kicks in the audio is spectacular! One of the finest riffs in heavy rock and it delivers on every level. In conjunction with a superb bass line it plays with sublime power and definition all the way through. I cannot overstate just how STUNNING the playback is - so often there is some static distortion but here it is as clear as a bell. A loud bell! The power and depth is out of this world and I cannot compliment this instrumental piece highly enough, wow! The end section / final vocal more than keeps up the standard and this fan favourite is easily Mint- at the very least.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the get go 'Rape Of The Locks' plays with great clarity. This intro is again often affected by static but there is barely any here, in fact it is so clean I noticed a bass line I haven't heard before! Shelley's first vocal section is flawless and the following instrumental is more or less perfect apart from a minor touch of light static at the start and a handful of very quiet statics. The final vocal / instrumental section has no intrusion and overall Near Mint is deserved.
The intro on 'All Night Petrol' plays so clearly with no obvious static and the opening vocal has no interference either. From then on it plays with a quality we kind of expect now! Bourge's solo section is stunning and the driving rhythm section is equal to that. The end vocal section / instrumental has no background and again I will grade as Near Mint and that's only because of a handful of minor statics through the play, nothing intrusive of course.
'You And I' plays with exceptional clarity and no interference. There is just one mega light static at the start but from then on the playback is crystal clear with no ticks, clicks etc. A stunning version that easily deserves a Mint- grade at the minimum. The clarity on this acoustic number is up there with the best I have ever heard.
Another classic in 'Homicidal Suicidal' and the intro is 'as new' for sure. The opening vocal is the same and it continues to play as you would want it to! With real depth and power and... no interference. During the first instrumental I only 'picked up' a couple of quiet statics but that isn't interference! The next vocal and instrumental plays with wonderful precision, not one dust tick even, and the first 'quieter' section is so close to perfect with barely any static and Shelley's 'heavy' bass solo / vocal section is superb! The final powerful section has just a hint of light static for all of one or two seconds and then the percussive conclusion rounds off this classic nicely! Minor static on the fade out. I will say Near Mint but it's fair to say the vast majority is stronger than that.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The non-laminated cover is in superb condition with only very minimal wear and as stated it is easily the 'cleanest' version I have ever seen. The edges and spine have no rubbing, the latter just has its usual 'compression' in some areas, 100% legible though. The corners are so clean with no obvious wear and the opening edge is close to perfect also. The front cover is totally unmarked and the only 'issue' is a little creasing in the top right corner. The back cover is in superb condition with only a minor hint of ringwear near the top. A stunning example overall and rarely found in this condition.
The poly-lined inner sleeve is in excellent shape with no side splits or tears and barely any marking. Some creasing here and there but nothing major. It is dated 5 - 69 so is either not the original or is one just left over waiting to be used.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing. Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Many thanks.
All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
