Budgie : Budgie 1L/1L 1st Press Red/Pink 'Dogbone' Label MCA
This very collectable first pressing plays with superb audio for the vast majority and a detailed grading is given below. The only obvious interference is during the final section of 'The Author' and on the 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' intro but apart from that it plays with stunning sonic quality. The power and depth of the audio is outstanding and this record has certainly not been over-played. S2 in particular is absolutely stunning!
The other Budgie LPs I am selling I had play graded and scheduled a couple of weeks ago. Their talented leader and frontman Burke Shelley sadly passed only two days ago so I just had to listen to their classic album and put up for auction. In my opinion it is one of the finest debuts ever recorded and went on to influence many bands such as Metallica and Iron Maiden. It was of course produced by Rodger Bain of Black Sabbath fame and recorded at the famous Rockfield Studios in South Wales. The audio has certainly retained the depth, warmth and richness that is characteristic of Rodger Bain recordings.
The cover is in very good condition with not too much shelf wear and the original inner is also excellent shape. As this is a first press it has the red/pink dogbone labels and the 1L/1L matrix.

Visual grading
The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a very healthy glossy sheen. S1 has a few faint hairlines with a couple that are a little more obvious and one small 1.5cm scratch also. S2 is in lovely condition with only some light sleeve removal hairlines. The red/pink 'dogbone' labels have no marking and only minimal spindle wear and have retained their original colour perfectly.
Play grading
The intro on 'Guts' has only the bare minimum of light static and as Shelley's familiar vocal comes in the playback is close to perfect with only light tick during the first verse. It continues to play with such strong audio and with that typical deep and resonant Budgie sound that has lost none of its original sonic quality. The mid instrumental is faultless and the remainder plays with no sign of any interference. This is a superb start to this classic album and Near Mint is very much deserved although the majority is better than that!
'Everything In My Heart' plays beautifully with no intrusion. A quiet acoustic track of course and it's rare for it to play with such impressive clarity. There are only a small number of insignificant dust ticks. Mint- is a fair reflection of the audio.
The first few seconds of 'The Author' plays very clearly with only the lightest of static and as Philips' percussion comes in the playback is stunning. The first two minutes of this classic are so quiet and yet the clarity is superb! A small number of minor dust ticks perhaps but there is literally nothing that intrudes on the quality of the 'listen'. The sound really is 'crystal clear'. As the volume increases the playback is STUNNING! Bourge's classic riff has never played any better and it continues to play with breathtaking power and depth and no distortion on the top end. The vocals are again so clean and only the final third of the track has some interference. This is during the heavy section and starts with some light ticks and it then plays with a click per rotation of the record which is due to the scratch as stated. A shame but at least the music still comes through powerfully. The opening 4+ minutes are Mint- but the final 2+ minutes can only be graded as VG-
The percussive intro on the timeless classic 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' plays very clearly with only a small number of light clicks. The good thing is there is no background static and by the time the volume increases the audio is perfect. Shelley's first vocal is equally as good and from then on it plays with sensational quality! Bourge's first excursion could not play with any greater precision and then the 'I got a feeling inside' vocal plays so clearly with no intrusion. That then leads into one of the finest riffs ever written in rock! It plays with a clarity, depth and power that is second to none and this entire section continues in the same STUNNING way with no interference, just 3/4 minor dust ticks. Shelley's bass is such a vital part of Budgie - it is so deep and strong and adds so much to the overall 'sound' plus you cannot forget Philips' powerful drumming which is another intrinsic part of this classic. I cannot emphasise enough just how well this section plays, there is no 'muddiness' to the sound and it's like you're back in 1971! The audio is so strong and precise and the final vocal is also flawless. The clarity and power is exceptional! I will grade the intro as VG but the rest is easily Mint- what a version!

'Rape Of The Locks' on S2 has a little static and a couple of crackle 'moments' on the intro but the music still plays very clearly. As volume increases the audio is faultless and that applies to the opening vocal also. From then on it plays with sublime quality and the long instrumental section is a prime example of that with no interference at all aside from a handful of light ticks towards the end. The final vocal is 'as new' and it plays with great clarity and power to the very end. I would say Ex for the intro is fair and then plays with Mint- quality for the remainder.
The intro on 'All Night Petrol' is superb from the get go and opening vocal has no 'background' either. The second verse has just one light tick but that is the only 'intrusion' across the entire track. The mid solo is 'as new' and the percussive/bass section that follows also plays with stunning precision. Right to the end there is no interference and this is another track that retains its original sonic quality with no clicks, pops or static. Just a couple of ticks on the fade out. Mint-
The acoustic 'You And I' plays with incredible clarity when you consider the album is 51 years old this year! There are a couple of barely audible ticks on the intro but you really cannot fault the audio here. It plays beautifully from start to finish and Shelley's vocal in particular is stunning. Mint-
The intro on the total classic 'Homicidal Suicidal' plays with perfect power and clarity and Shelley's first vocal is just as impressive. From then on it plays with awesome quality! That deep and rich Budgie sound is still very much to the fore and there are just no negatives. Every note is just so sharp and precise. There are no clicks, pops or static and even the 'quieter' section towards the end where the pace drops has only a couple of minor ticks. Bourge's next riff is perfect and the super 'heavy' bass section then plays with incredible definition and...no interference. This is superb! The 'high octane' finish ends this classic with stunning quality and this is without doubt one of the finest versions I have ever heard. A breathtaking Mint- finish to the album.
In summary this very collectable first pressing plays to a wonderful standard for the majority and S2 in particular is fantastic! The only 'real' intrusion across the entire album is the end section on 'The Author' but at least it's only a click once per rotation of the record and there are obviously no sticks or jumps. Aside from that the clarity, power and depth of the audio is so impressive and I am sure the winning bidder will agree. A genuine classic debut album made all the more poignant following the passing of their leader and front man Burke Shelley.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in very good condition with only a little shelf wear and certainly nothing major. When you consider it isn't laminated it has withstood the test of time very well. The edges have some rubbing, a little more on the bottom edge, and the thin pinched spine also has a little wear here and there. You can still just about read Budgie but some of the lettering has disappeared. The four corners do not actually have that much wear and the opening edge is near perfect with barely any wear. The front cover is very clean overall with only one sticker removal mark top left and one small scuff near the centre which is not immediately noticeable as it is so faint. The back cover is in great shape with only minor fading near the top and a little ringwear which you can see on the front also, a common issue with this cover. Both sides have retained their original colour and overall this is an impressive example of this cover, not wrecked like so many!
The original poly-lined Stereo inner has no side splits or tears and only a little creasing. Budgie, 1971 and the cat number are written on one side but that's not really a problem!
