Budgie : Never Turn Your Back On A Friend 2L/1L 1st Press Silver/Black MCA Label 1973
This very collectable first pressing plays with very impressive audio with only minimal interference - just two light clicks on each side. As for the remainder? The audio is stunning! Based on the clarity and definition of the audio the record has not been played very much and there is also only minimal spindle wear to back up that theory. So much of this classic album plays with genuine quality, you won't find many better!
The cover is in great condition with only minimal shelf wear and has retained its original shape extremely well. The poly-lined inner is also very clean with very little wear.

Visual grading
The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has an impressive glossy sheen. The only real negative is one tiny needle drop mark on S1 but there are no actual scratches on either side. There are some faint hairlines but they are superficial and have no affect on the audio, only a couple on S2 are a little more obvious. The silver/black labels are in superb order with no marking or writing and only very minimal spindle wear.
Play grading
The classic 'Breadfan' plays with stunning audio from the get go. The superb 'riff' intro has just one barely audible tick and as Shelley's vocal comes in the playback is 100% faultless. It continues in the same manner with a genuine sense of power and depth and there is no interference. The acoustic mid section plays so clearly with only one crackle sound and just a minimal amount of very light static towards the end. The final 'high octane' section plays perfectly and Near Mint is a fair assessment of the audio.
'Baby Please Don't Go' has two dull clicks on the intro due to the tiny needle drop mark as stated but aside from that there is no intrusion. From then onwards it plays with great precision and again the depth of the audio is just so impressive. The mid section instrumental could not play any better and the final vocal is equally as good. I will grade the intro as VG+ but the rest is Mint for sure.
'I Will Always Love You' plays beautifully from start to finish with only 3/4 very light ticks. Not bad for a quiet acoustic track! This is easily a Mint- track.
The percussive intro on 'You're The Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk' plays with sensational clarity and depth with just one very light tick at the start. Wow it's good! As the track 'kicks into gear' the audio is of the highest standard and it proceeds in the same way with a sonic quality that is as good as it would've been back in '73! Every section plays with sublime quality and nowhere is that more obvious than on Bourge's mid solo. The classic 'What kind of a woman' end section is phenomenal! It demands to be played loud and 'as new' is a perfect description. The power and definition of the audio here is tangible and there is no distortion on the top end. I am confident in grading this classic as Mint and I am sure the winning bidder will agree!

'In The Grip Of A Tyrefitter's Hand' has just one very light tick on the intro (not a click!) and the opening vocal sections then play with stunning precision. The instrumental is 'as new' and it continues in the same precise way with no intrusion. The fast paced final section is flawless and the fade out has no 'background' either. Mint-
The acoustic 'Riding My Nightmare' plays with great clarity with only a small number of very light ticks after the first chorus and into the next verse. They are very quiet and hardly intrusive and the remainder plays perfectly. I think Near Mint- is a fair grade here.
The opening section on 'Parents' is superb! There are a couple of light clicks on the following acoustic section but there is no background static at all. It then plays with a warmth and depth you rarely find on the first pressings and the clarity is just out of this world! Each note is so clean and sharp and Bourge's solos are just MINT in every way. A shame about the two light clicks at the start because the rest has to be the strongest I have ever heard and the final vocal section does not disappoint either. The final solo is 'as new' and the 'seagull' end section and fade out have no interference. A sublime 10 minutes of music! I will grade that brief section as VG but as for the rest - I honestly think Mint is a genuine representation of the audio. A stunning track.
In summary this collectable first pressing plays to a superb standard with only minimal interference. A couple of light clicks on each side that is all and the rest of the album has a clarity and depth that is second to none. In essence the majority plays as Mint and for once there is no underlying static which can affect the listening 'experience'. The vinyl is also very clean as stated and it would be difficult to find a better copy.
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in excellent condition with hardly any shelf wear. The edges are very clean with only minimal wear and the wide spine is very strong with only a little rubbing on the top corner. The other corners are in excellent shape with very little wear and the opening edges have hardly any handling wear. The front cover is super clean with just one small 'white' scuff top left and the back cover has only a hint of minor ringwear. The inside of the gatefold is so close to perfect with only very very minimal fading around the edges and a couple of white specks. A fine example overall.
The poly-lined blue Stereo inner (dated 8-73) is in great condition and has no side splits or tears and only minimal age related fading around the edges. Minimal creasing also.
