Budgie : Squawk 1L/1L Silver/Black MCA Label
On offer here is another very collectable album from Budgie and I am pleased to say it plays with incredible sonic quality on both sides. There is no interference apart from one light click on S1 and the clarity, definition and power of the audio is exceptional. The vinyl is visually stunning and there is no spindle wear at all, perhaps this record has never been played before? It certainly sounds like it!
The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the inner sleeve is the same.
I think this is a second press as I believe the first had the blue/black hexagonal label. It is a very early one nonetheless and is a stunning example of its type.

Visual grading
The vinyl is in superb condition and still has an lovely glossy sheen. There are no marks or scratches and I can only detect one very faint hairline across S1 - believe me it is very very faint! I can also see a couple of very small hairline 'scuffs' on S1 but they are not easy to find again as they are so faint. This of course has no affect on the fantastic audio! S2 is in supreme condition with no marking of any kind. The run out grooves are pristine and the silver/black MCA labels are 'as new' with no marks and no spindle wear.
Play grading
'Whisky River' plays with superb audio from the very first note with no intrusion. Bourge's guitar shows off that typical deep Budgie sound while Shelley's vocals are very 'clean' and precise also. There are no ticks, clicks, pops or static and this is easily a Mint start to the album. The long fade out does not even have a single dust tick!
'Rocking Man' plays to the same standard with no interference. The clarity, power and depth of the audio is so strong and there really are no negatives. Ok there is one light tick during the mid instrumental but it is so quiet and totally non-intrusive. Plus 3/4 dust ticks on the fade out. A Mint- grade is fair.
The acoustic 'Rolling Home Again' plays with immaculate clarity from start to finish with no background. It could not play with any greater precision and Mint is richly deserved.
The intro on 'Make Me Happy' is faultless and Shelley's opening vocal is just as impressive. There is one light click just prior to the second verse but that is the only interference during the entire track. I will say Near Mint but of course the majority is better than that!
The intro on 'Hot As A Docker's Armpit' plays with sublime quality and from then on plays like it has never been on a turntable before! Bourge's end sequence in particular is stunning and the high octane finale is breathtaking! A Mint version and wow what a version!

'Drugstore Woman' again plays with outstanding quality from start to finish. Every vocal and instrumental plays to perfection and even the repeated 'Woman' at the end has no interference. Mint
The instrumental 'Bottled' plays with perfect clarity throughout with...no background. Another Mint track.
The slow build up acoustic intro 'Young Is A World' plays beautifully and 'as new' is a correct description. The opening vocal is flawless and it continues to play with such a strong clear sound and Shelley's vocal is the perfect accompaniment here. The first 'heavy section' plays with imperious quality and indeed the remainder of this classic plays to the same 'high end' standard. Bourge's work is as usual exemplary and Shelley's strong bass adds so much to the mix. His final vocal has no background and I detected only 3/4 mega light dust ticks on the acoustic end section. A stunning track that deserves a Mint grade in my opinion.
'Stranded' plays with great power and depth from the very first note to the last. Despite being the final track there is no inner groove distortion and the 'heavy' section around the half way mark is reminiscent of their classic debut album. the bass section has no interference and the next vocal plays with superb precision...again. Audio does not get any better than this! The final section is so powerful and again you know the grade on this one. A sublime Mint finish to the album.
In summary this album plays with stunning quality and with only one light click the clarity could hardly be any better any better. There is no background static and the depth of the audio is also very impressive. It may not have quite the same energy and power as their classic debut and not as many classic riffs but it is still a fine album and a 'must have' for any Budgie collection.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear. The edges have very little rubbing and the thin pinched spine is in great shape with barely any wear. Only the top two corners have some minor wear and the opening edge is pristine. The front cover is very clean with no marking and has just one minor rubs and a little ringwear again. This cover has been very well preserved in my opinion. I have seen many that have not faired well due to mishandling and this is exacerbated by it not being laminated of course. You won't find many better than this.
The plain white die-cut inner has just one very small side split, only very minimal age related fading and hardly any creasing. It has the Patent no and Made In Great Britain printed on one side.
Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable // B & W 684 Speakers
This record has been professionally cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
