Description
Budgie : Squawk 1L/1L Silver/Black MCA Label 1972
This very collectable album is plays to an standard that can honestly be described 'as new' no exaggeration. The clarity, depth and power on both sides is sublime and you could not find a 'cleaner' version. It certainly qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic. It has retained its original sonic quality and I suspect has only been once or twice at most. There is only one barely visible spindle on the S1 label and the vinyl is visually 'shop fresh' it could be said, I have never seen better.
There is some conjecture as to what defines a first pressing. I think the blue/black label is an original first press with the silver/black one being the first variation of that pressing. Regardless it is a very early pressing!
The cover has a little wear but nothing major as does the poly-lined inner but it really is the vinyl that stands out here as you want it to I guess!

Visual grading
The vinyl is immaculate! It has a beautiful jet-black glossy sheen and there are obviously no marks, scratches orr groove wear to be seen. Even under a strong light I cannot detect any sleeve removal hairlines and only the S1 label has one tiny and barely visible spindle trace. The silver/black labels are 'as new' basically. A stunning vinyl.
Play grading
'Whisky River' is 'as new' from start to finish with no sign of any interference. It plays with tremendous clarity, depth and power with that familiar deep Bourge guitar so instrumental in the classic Budgie sound. There is just one very light static tick on the fade out so will grade as Mint- accordingly.
The percussive intro on 'Rocking Man' has no 'background' and the same can be said for the first vocal. It continues to play without fault and the first 'silent' section is... totally silent. A couple of mega light static ticks as you come out of it and then the instrumental section plays to perfection. The end vocal has no intrusion and the final few seconds have only a handful of non-intrusive ticks. This is Mint- once again.
The acoustic 'Rolling Home Again' plays beautifully with no 'background' of any kind. The clarity is stunning and Mint is very much deserved.
The intro on 'Make Me Happy' is of the same 'high end' standard with not even a dust tick to be heard. Each note is so clean and precise and it plays like it has never been played before, I can pay it no higher compliment. Mint
'Hot As A Docker's Armpit' plays with stunning quality from the very first note and proceeds in exactly the same way. Yes the vinyl has an immaculate visual quality but appearances can sometimes be deceiving but that is certainly not the case here. The original sonic quality is still there with audio strong and powerful. The instrumental section is STUNNING and the 'high octane' end section is exceptional with no distortion on the top end. This has to be Mint - what a version!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
'Drugstore Woman' starts S2 where S1 left off with sublime clarity and power. As always I have listened to every second and there is quite simply no intrusion on the audio from the first groove to the last. The solo 'woman' vocal at the end has just one light static tick but that hardly qualifies as interference but let's say Mint- to be cautious :-)
This audio quality is kept up on the instrumental 'Bottled' which has no 'background' whatsoever. Mint
The acoustic intro on 'Young Is A World' plays with amazing clarity! The clarity throughout is stunning for a vinyl close to 50 years old and nowhere is that more obvious than here. I cannot emphasise enough just how pristine the audio is, what a start! The opening vocal section plays beautifully and again the clarity of sound is exceptional. Bourge's introduction continues this fine form and the next vocal is 'as new' also. This album was recorded/produced 'loud', at the famous Rockfield Studios of course, and you can certainly 'push' it to the max on the following instrumental section without fear of distortion. This is audio of the highest order and the final acoustic section and fade out have no 'background' either. Mint is again an easy grade to give.
The staccato intro on 'Stranded' is faultless as is the remainder of this section. Shelley's first vocal is perfect and from that point on it plays with STUNNING precision and...no interference. The 'heavy' mid instrumental is just mind-blowing and it just could not play any better. The solo bass section that follows is 'as new' and the final vocal and instrumental have no interference. Right to the end this plays with fantastic audio and provides a Mint finish to this classic album.
In summary this very collectable album plays to a FINAL UPGRADE standard with no interference on either side. The clarity is first class with no clicks or pops and no underlying static either. You can tell it has hardly been played (if ever?!) judging by the visual quality and it really does play with incredible precision throughout. A handful of very quiet static ticks but you cannot fault the clarity in any way and the depth and power of that classic Budgie sound is 'as new' also. You could not improve upon this audio!
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in excellent condition with only one area of wear that is a little obvious. This is in the top left corner where there is some 'rubbing' and a little creasing. Aside from that the cover is in great shape - the top edge has some rubbing although the bottom edge is very clean and the thin pinched spine is fully legible with just minimal wear on the bottom corner. The right hand have only very minimal wear also and the opening edge is as close to perfect as could be. The front cover has no marking and only a little ringwear in the top half and the wear top left as stated. The back cover has a little fading around around the edges and some ringwear again but overall this is a strong Ex- cover. Better than many you will find today.
The poly-lined blue Stereo inner has no side splits splits but does have one small tear on the top edge and some fading around the edges also. This one is dated 8-73 so I assume they were a bit ahead of themselves on this one.
