OUTSTANDIND SET w/DIFFERING MIXES TO STANDARD VERSIONS
BUMPERSUK ISLAND (IDP 1) FIRST PRESSING (June 1970) OF THE LABEL'S MAGNIFICENT DOUBLE LP SAMPLER
A bountiful double album package rounding up the cream of the UK Island label's 1970 output, highlighting recent releases and anticipating forthcoming ones.
Of all the labels operating in the UK as the decade turned, Island was unquestionably the most adventurous, at the same time as maintaining a stable whose internal logic now seems impeccable.
Leaning towards the folkier side of hard rock, and the bluesier edge of prog - an adventure that allowed King Crimson and Mott The Hoople to rub shoulders with Cat Stevens and Traffic.
Tracks from the Keith Relf/Jim McCarty-era Renaissance, Clouds and Quintessence remind us of a day when even the greatest modern collectibles were just regular new releases.
Today Island ranks among the most collectible British label of the entire era and every track on Bumpers offers a reason why
Tremendous compilation which contains genuine rarities/differing mixes to their standard release versions -
Spooky Tooth’s “I Am The Walrus" has different production to the album version
The version of 'Cadence & Cascade' on Bumpers is a unique, faded-short mix of a song
The Dave Mason track is the B-side to his 1968 single "Just For You"
Free’s 'Oh I Wept' is presented in a mix unique to Bumpers
The Clouds track only made it onto vinyl on "Up Above Our Heads", which did not get a UK-release
And, when "Bumpers" was released, Nick Drake's second LP, "Bryter Layter" was yet to be issued, so this album contains the first availability of the deeply beautiful, "Hazey Jane"

Bronco - Extra electric guitar part played lightly on introduction
Spooky Tooth - The guitar solo at the end has its first eight bars missing
Quintessence - The track is LIVE
Mott The Hoople - Extra guitar melody in instrumental bridge section
Blodwyn Pig - Runs at slightly slower speed
Cadence And Cascade - Fades out early and loses last thirty seconds of flute solo
Oh I Wept - Different vocal take
Hazey Jane - Instruments eg. guitar, strings. are panned differently

LABELS: NEAR MINT
Clean, bright and unmarked roughly textured labels which have lost none of their strong vibrant pink colour - just a few light spindle traces
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT+
Both records retain their original deep glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - there are some in-vinyl pressing blemishes common on theses early Island releases and a couple of hairlines but none of these have any audible significance
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT+
Fantastic sound quality throughout and my play-check at loud volume found little to fault - just an occasional random click/touch of surface but nothing I found in the slightest intrusive - the whole set plays beautifully and was an absolute joy to hear
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT
The gatefold cover is clean and bright with little wear to speak of - just some fading to the yellow colour on the opening edge and spine. The original owners name is written discreetly top back but this too has faded
