Kentucky guitarist Kenny Burrell was barely into his late 20s when he assembled the absurdly stacked cast behind this 1958 Blue Note session, pulling together figures like Art Blakey, Tina Brooks and Bobby Timmons for a record that still feels effortless in the way only great jazz does. 'Yes Baby' moves with loose-limbed swing and just enough grit around the edges, while 'Scotch Blues' settles into a slower, smoky sort of late-night drift. On the flip, 'Autumn In New York' is handled with real tenderness before 'Caravan' pulls the session somewhere more animated and fiery. The Andy Warhol sleeve still looks impossibly cool, too.
