Few lost albums have acquired quite the mythology surrounding After The Astronaut. Recorded in the aftermath of the unexpected success of 'Pepper', it captured Texas oddballs Butthole Surfers at a point where they seemed determined to become even stranger. Label disputes left the record stranded for more than 25 years, with parts of its DNA eventually surfacing on Weird Revolution, while the original recordings gathered near-legendary status amongst fans. Listening now, it's easy to hear why. From the warped electronics of 'Intelligent Guy' and 'Jet Fighter' to the psychedelic drift of 'Venus' and 'The Last Astronaut', the album pushes far beyond conventional rock frameworks. 'Junkie Jenny In Gaytown' and 'They Came In' are similarly unhinged. A fascinating snapshot of a band refusing to take the obvious route.
