12” ALBUM

RELEASED BY AU.GO.GO

RELEASED IN 1987

CATALOGUE NUMBER: ANDA 61

Sleeve

Stunning looking sleeve that has stood the test of time and has obviously been well cared for. No handwriting, no stickers or sticker marks, no dirty marks or stains. The cover front and back look very fine, no creases and no tears. The corners are very sharp, with just a touch of wear to the tips. The opening edge is flat with no signs of feathering. The spine is solid, with all text clear and visible. The spine has no splits. The top edge of the sleeve is also in excellent condition with no wear, or splits. The bottom edge is looking good but does has a split in the center of around 2.5”. All in all had it not been for the split I mentioned this cover would easily have graded my highest grade of excellent plus, one short of near mint. However due to the split I’m grading it down to very good minus.

Inner sleeve

Plain plastic sleeve is in excellent condition. I will provide a plain white inner along with this for shipping purposes.

Labels

Yellow paper labels. Both are vibrant and bright, no marks, stickers or handwriting. No real spindle marks to speak of. A really great looking pair. They grade an easy excellent plus.

Side one audio grade

Right, I’m going to be writing notes here as I listen to both sides straight through. It is my goal to be as accurate as possible. Very good sounding start, no loud pops or clicks, some very low level dust in the background The track builds up really well and the audio sounds good. Once the band kick in the audio is sounding loud and free from any deterioration of the overall quality. “Sweat Loaf” is an awesome sounding track and one of my favourites from this lp. Great sounding audio during the quieter break down, before kicking off again. The transition into “Graveyard” is pretty quiet. This track is also sounding really good. No breaking up of the sound quality, and a full sounding audio. “Pittsburg to Lebanon” has a great guitar sound going on. It has upheld its sound quality well for its age, and the fact that I haven’t played it in around 10 years. Even in the short section of radio samples the background is very quiet. “Weber” sounded perfect, and “Hay”, another of my favourite tracks is still sounding very fresh . Very quiet between tracks. “ Human cannonball” sounding like a wall of sound. Warm low ends and clear top notes make up the great sounding audio for this track.

Over all it is an outstanding sounding side. No repeating pops or clicks, no skips, scuffs or jumps. Never once did the record stick. Despite its age, there is very little lessening to the sound quality on this side. There is some low dust crackle which would be improved by a deep clean to take it up a half grade. I’m pleased with the quality here and I’m giving it a grade of excellent minus.

Side one visual grade

Both sides have retained a nice glossy sheen. They is very little sign of being overplayed, nice clean looking vinyl. No hard scratches. A few very superficial marks from sleeve removal, cleaning. A nice looking side that grades excellent minus.

If any marks show up during playback I would have mentioned them above in the audio grading.

Side two audio grade

Well I am hoping for great things from this side as I never really played it often due to my two favourite songs being on side one. “ USSA” sounds brilliant is all its splendid edginess. No sound deterioration at all, it sounds really crisp.”T O-men” is a perfect sonic assault that is sounding great here, like I mentioned, I haven’t played this side more than about 20 times in its life since purchased new. What a great track, and it sounded awesome. “Kuntz” starts off really well considering it quiet a low sounding song to begin with, nice clear sound and no obtrusive background crackle. The track is sounding really good throughout. “Graveyard” has a nice quiet start, clean audio, the guitars and bass kicks  in and its all nice and full sounding. Vocal sound crisp with no signs of a lessening of sound quality. Really not an overplayed side at all, and it shows. Sounds perfect. “22 going on 23” is sounding really fresh, no noticeable background noise, a very clear sounding track. So all in, that was a really top sounding side also. I heard no pops or clicks, no jumps scuffs or skips. Never once did I have to get up to move the stylus on. Very minimal background crackle. Played much less than the first side. I’m happy to grade the audio here as excellent.

Side two visual grade

Similar to side one, great sheen, no signs of mishandling, no hard scratches and a few hairlines of no exception. I’m grading this side as excellent.

If any marks show up during playback I would have mentioned them above in the audio grading.

Final thoughts

This is an album that musically hasn’t age at all, it still sounds great after all these years. It been well cared for, both the sleeve and the vinyl. There are some signs of use and very light wear. Because of the small split in one side this would knock it out as a contender for a final final upgrade. But this does stand up as a really well preserved and great sounding lp with a generally high standard of audio.

GRADING

I use the U.K Rare Record Guide grading system detailed below.

MINT The LP or single is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT The LP or single shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD The LP or single has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and an occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover and contents without any major defects.

GOOD The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
