Description

This is one of the earliest examples of Glenn Gould's mono 1956 album from Columbia Masterworks (ML 5060), Bach: The Goldberg Variations, a complete performance of The Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach. All are performed on piano by Glenn Gould.
Album notes are in English by Glenn Gould. Also included is a photocopied review of the performance from a circa-1980 edition of Gramophone magazine.
This example of the 1956 release is an early edition in which both the outer and inner sleeves are cardboard, what Columbia describes as their "New Inner Shield Jacket," with Glenn Gould's notes beginning on the outer back (labeled as "PAGE ONE") and continuing to the inner sleeve ("PAGE TWO"). (See Photos 2 & 3) The other side of the inner sleeve contains details of their new Long Playing records and how to care for them. (Photo 4) There is a small collection index sticker in the upper right corner of the back. (Photo 2)
The record itself is the relatively rare version showing the 6-eye label, album title in large condensed typeface, and no printed "Side 1" or "Side 2" labels, only the range of Variation numbers for each side. (Photos 5 & 6) A small "H" in the runout on each side denotes a Hollywood plant pressing.
There are a few faint but visible needle scratches, one or two on each side. We have played the album in full several times on a Thorens TD 126 Mk III turntable and did not notice any problems, but this record should not be considered Near Mint.
The outer album sleeve has tape repairs across the entire top edge to close up a seam split. The inner sleeve (cardboard, not paper) has a 2" top split beginning at the open end, and a 3" side split opposite the open end. Because the disc is such a tight fit in the inner sleeve, and that in turn is a tight fit in the outer sleeve, we will be shipping the record outside of the album in a plain white paper sleeve.
This is one of many titles from an extensive collection of classical LPs and CDs that we will be listing here. All have been carefully stored for many years, played only on premium equipment, and show little to no wear.
NOTES:

  • Album sleeves may have a small index sticker, usually in the upper right corner of the back, which was applied when the album was first purchased for this private collection.
