Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This superb and now quite rare 3LP box from EMI (27 0608 3, German Electrola pressing, DMM · Direct Metal Mastering, large dog semi-circle label, DDD stereo, booklet included) features pianist/conductor Daniel Barenboim leading the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from the keyboard in a magnificent traversal of Beethoven’s 5 Concertos for Piano and Orchestra.
These readings are less heavy than his first cycle with Klemperer, though with no loss of power. And Barenboim is in perfect accord with the Berliners throughout the entire cycle – a marvel of its kind.
These recordings were made entirely at the Philharmonie, Berlin in February and June 1985 (producers: Daniel Barenboim and Wolfgang Gülich / engineer: Wolfgang Gülich).
The exact contents are as follows:
Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major Op. 15
Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major Op. 19
Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor Op. 37
Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major Op. 58
Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major Op. 73 “Emperor”
Incidentally, the striking cover photo of Barenboim is a still taken from the film “Daniel Barenboim and the Berliner Philharmoniker” (Metropolitan, Munich).
As issued there is included a fine CD-sized 34-page booklet with extensive notes on the music in German (by Matthias Henke), as well as in English and French (by R. Kinloch Anderson). Writer Matthias Henke also supplies a discussion of Barenboim in his role as pianist/conductor, an essay provided in all three languages.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is near-MINT. Really, the only flaw concerns a tiny ding to the lower-right corner and faint shelfwear, but that is all. Otherwise, the box appears almost as new. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the box remains solid, bright, glossy, and striking in appearance – overall, a fine collector's copy.
The condition of the 3 LPs is near-MINT throughout. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really these are very fine copies and playback is truly superb across all 6 sides. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this set. Overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.
