Description

The MIkrokosmos was composed between 1926 and 1937, intended to be a complete education for anyone studying the piano. Gyorgy Sandor was acknowledged to be the finest interpreter of Bartok's piano music, after the composer himself. Sandor recorded the six books of the Mikrokosmos on the 75th anniversary of Bartok's birth in 1956, eleven years after his death from leukemia. I have never seen a more pristine set of 65-year-old LPs than this Columbia set SL-229 (ML 5082, 5083, 5084). I played the first side of the set: the pressing is still perfect. Among the illustrations in the 16-page booklet, much of it written by Sandor, is a picture of Bartok on one of his folk-song collecting trips, with his recording machine and a group of villagers in the mountains of Transylvania in 1910, the photo taken by Zoltan Kodaly. The booklet and the records in their sleeves are housed in a sturdy, elegant slipcase, and the whole package looks like it just came from the record shop.
