The Beach Boys

Surfin' b/w Luau

Candix Records 301 (NOT distributed by ERA-see photo)

Condition grade: VG-

This is the record that started it all.  The very first release from the band that would define the California lifestyle.  Released in 1961 on Candix and X records, later distribution was picked up by Era records.  Most copies you will find have the Era records distribution credit on left side of center hole.  THIS record has no mention of Era records on the label.  THIS is the record for serious Beach Boys collectors.  Being a huge Beach Boys fan myself, this was a fantastic find for me.

I have play-graded all my items up for bid and I stand by my grade.  This record sounds great!  The only drawback is that the label was unfortunately "touched up" by a child with a paintbrush, probably the work of the original owner's son or daughter.  You can see in the photo below where the Candix logo was colored in.  There's also a small tear in the label just under the "AN" in "CANDIX".  Obviously, these defects affect the value of the record.  I still believe this is a great find for any collector, at the very least as a place holder until a better copy can be obtained. If it doesn't sell, I'm perfectly happy to add it to my own collection.  I will not be putting it up for bid again if it doesn't sell.  Hearing the Beach Boys' first recordng come booming out of my vintage Columbia portable turntable was a thrill!  Also, the b-side, Luau, was a new find for me, not available on any of the Capitol reissues.

This is a great and rare find that deserves a place in someone's collection-the beginning of a legacy that continues on even today as Brian Wilson still wows us with his musical genius.
