Description
This auction is for the very first pressing of the Beatles 45 single "Hey Jude" / "Revolution." This is the first release on Apple Records in 1968, and it appears that they were still working out the label format at that time. This early version Apple label lacks three bits of information that would appear on subsequent "Hey Jude" pressings:
1. No "Recorded in England"
2. No Matrix Number
3. No George Martin production credit.
This also has the characteristic "sideways" orientation of the B-side which was only used on early pressings of this record in the USA.
This is a Los Angeles pressing (it has the tiny * symbol pressed into the play-out grooves) and corresponds to Spizer number APP 2276.01L(i)(as) (from Bruce Spizer’s terrific reference book The Beatles on Apple Records). This 45 was reissued a lot throughout the vinyl era, and there are a lot of variations, but here is the very first pressing from 1968. Some web sites sell mint copies of this for a couple hundred bucks (really, it is probably not that rare).
The vinyl is glossy but has some faint scuffs light scratching. I played it and there are no skips, but noticeable crackling, especially during the quiet parts. The labels, as you can see in the scans, are very nice with no writing or other damage. It comes in a plain white, unoriginal sleeve.
