They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning.  I can’t test-play at the minute. Beatles LP Magical Mystery Tour 1968 UNDOCUMENTED Apple Label, EX!

The chances are very good that you’ve never seen one of these before.  The Side 2 label of this Jacksonville pressing is so scarce that in 51 years of collecting, I’ve never seen a second copy. 

The most distinguishing characteristic about this label is that the title is very close down to the playhole of the album.  Also features the “Subsidiary of..” text, with the small white Capitol logo at the 5 O’Clock position at the bottom of the label.  This label variation was the first Apple label to go into production in 1968, making this copy the very first and very short-lived Apple label for this title.  To my knowledge, this variation was only pressed from the Jacksonville plant.  Never having seen another copy before or since, this must have been an in-house rearrangement of the previous black Capitol “Subsidiary of..” label from 1968.  See Compere Photo.

This label variation has never appeared in any of the great books, nor has it ever been discussed.  That’s because it hasn’t been discovered until now.

**This is the copy that is pictured in my two-volume set, “Demystifying the Beatles” books on flash drive.  Hate to give it up without finding a replacement copy, but it’s time to hand it over to another serious collector.**

Vinyl--- EX/EX.  Both sides shine 90% or better, fresh gloss.  There’s some dulling of the grooves and some cloudiness on both sides. But the last time I was able to play it, I noted that these don’t affect playback. 

Plates--- B12/B12.  These are early plates for the Apple label reissues.  Playback sizzles with crisp high-end.  Hand-etched letter “O” in the dead wax on both sides makes this copy pressed in Jacksonville.

Cover--- VG.  Has general wear all around.  Light light dirtwear on the front cover, light ringwear on the back.  Top and bottom seams have small areas of weak spots, but NO SPLIT SEAMS.

Gatefold--- VG+.  Front and back panels have very light yellowing.  Booklet is complete, but detached.  Sounds a lot like my younger sister.  Gatefold center seam has a one-inch split.

Labels--- NM/NM.  Both Jax labels are dark and glossy, just like they were in the late 60’s, when they were printed up.  NO SPINDLE MARKS. See Compere Photos for the more common Apple “Subsidiary of..” label from 1968, as well as the “Subsidiary of..” black Capitol label from which this label was rearranged.

Inner Sleeve--- VG+. Generic white inner sleeve with no die-cut hole for the labels to show is present.  This was the same inner sleeve that was issued with the earlier 1968 “Subsidiary of..” black Capitol label. 

Sleeve has moderately yellowed on both sides.  Has light to moderate crease from improper insertion at the factory as well as light record outdent.  Bottom seam has a tiny 1/32nd inch split, so don’t store the album inside this sleeve.

A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original inner sleeve en route.

RIAA: N/A.

**If I’m never going to see another copy of this one again, you’re sure not going to either.  Better grab this one while there’s one available at all, and then wish me luck.**

As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up.  Thanks!)
