READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can’t test-play at the minute. I don’t know anything about this LP, except to say that if it’s a bootleg, it’s incredibly convincing. Clearly a later pressing. 99.95% of yellow vinyl copies of “Magical Mystery Tour” that you will find are the British black Parlophone reissue that people seem to think they will get $200.00 for when they’re everywhere. Come and get your share.
This copy is on the Apple label, and this is the only one I’ve ever seen in person. There was one other just a couple years ago, but the vinyl was a solid yellow. This one has splashes of black and green on each side. See photos.
For me, the real test of the mix is Side 2. The songs are mirror-imaged, and in far greater sound quality and hard-panned right/left than the American LP. Ringo’s drums, which appear in the left channel on the U.S. pressings, appear in the right channel on this one. The center channel on the U.S. pressings was used sparingly, mostly for vocals. This pressing has a far more efficient use of the center channel.
Check out “Strawberry Fields Forever,” which has much sharper detail of the Mellotron pieces. On the U.S. issues, the first time John sings the words, “going to,” there’s a pulsing Mellotron (boopboopboopboop, boopboopboopboop), buried in the right channel, hardly noticeable. On this German mix, it is brought front and center and loud in the middle channel.
On the U.S. issue, Ringo’s drums stay entirely in the left channel for the entire song. But the German mix places Ringo’s overdubbed snare front and center, which gives detail to the Mellotron.
After the third chorus, you can clearly hear John whisper, “two, three, four.” But only an astute ear can hear him doing that in the right channel on the U.S. mix. And finally, during the fadeout of the U.S. mix, you hear John’s famous “I buried Paul/ Cranberry Sauce” mutterance. On the German mix, he buries Paul twice during the fadeout.
On the U.S. issues, the last two tracks, “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” and “All You Need is Love” are the 45 mono mixes. But this German stereo issue has true stereo mixes that are fascinating and bold, not available in the U.S.
Vinyl--- NM/ NM. My notes say that there is static between tracks. A VPI cleaning should rejuvenate the vinyl.
Plates--- MMT 01-A1/ MMT 01-B1. Nothing else.
Cover--- Excellent. Just a light amount of slick loss to the top and bottom seams. Full gloss. Bright colors, pure white back cover.
I’ve had copies of the German early 70’s stereo issue in the past, and this cover looks absolutely identical to those.
Labels--- NM/ NM. Concentric ring placement is identical to the early 70’s issue. With the exception of the Horzu on the first and earliest copies, these Apple labels look just like the factory labels used.
Inner Sleeve--- NM generic, thick white inner sleeves that came out of Germany in the 70’s through the 90’s.
This one’s going to make a great Christmas gift under the tree. Just keep it away from the radiator.
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
