READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning.  I can’t test-play at the minute. Please don’t bid if this is a problem for you.

Beatles LP Magical Mystery Tour SCARCER Early 1971 Apple Straight Transfer, NM!

Not many collectors are very familiar with Capitol’s practice of issuing the very earliest copies of Apple titles, using the label layout templates from the previous issues.  This practice was done in order to keep the catalogue in full production in the shops while the new label layout templates were being prepared.

In this case, the previous label layout template was prepared for the green Target Capitol labels.

Comparing their labels for Side 1 to this earlier Apple issue, you can see that their text layouts are near-identical.  The only differences are that the Apple label has moved the “Recorded in England” disclaimer up a little, and the word, “Stereo” to the right side of the label.  The Side 2 labels are similar, except that Apple had to rearrange the album title, “The Beatles” and the band members’ names to the left shoulder of the sliced Apple.

These label layouts didn’t last for very long.  Apple had typeset how the new labels should look, and from that point forward, all Apple issues from all pressing plants followed the text layout throughout all the future Apple label variations that we all know very well.  See Compere Photos.

What makes this label variation even scarcer is that it is specific to the Winchester plant, and for such a short period of time.

Vinyl--- NM/EX.  Side 1 looks unplayed, except for a spec that was embedded into the vinyl at the factory.  Side 2 is EX, due to some manufacturer’s cloudiness in the vinyl in some isolated areas.

Plates--- P1/W2.  Hand-etched Delta symbol (or rifle) in the dead wax on both sides makes this copy pressed in Winchester.

Cover--- VG.  Front and back covers have light dirtwear and white wear.  Not bad.  Top and bottom seams have moderate shelfwear.  A couple small digs out of the bottom seam.  Top seam has a ¾-inch split.

Gatefold--- VG.  Light yellowing to the front and back panels, nothing bad.  The booklet is detached, though.

NO CENTER SPLIT SEAMS.

Labels--- NM/NM.  Both labels are very beautiful.  Brand new, freshly-printed looking.  NO SPINDLE MARKS ON EITHER SIDE.

Inner Sleeve--- VG+.  Good-looking inner sleeve.  Light yellowing from over the decades.  Light to moderate record outdent.  Light amount of finger divots, not bad. NO SPLIT SEAMS.

A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original inner sleeve en route.

RIAA--- N/A

**Please see the copy of “Rubber Soul” for sale this week, also a straight transfer copy from the green Target Capitol labels!  These two titles will get you a remarkable start to completing this scarce label run.**

As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up.  Thanks!)

Note:  All LP’s ship outside of their album covers in order not to damage the covers during shipment.

CAUTION!  There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids.  A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.

Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!

(Please note:  Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized.  The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle.  Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix?  Thanks!)
