“Lady Madonna”

Capitol 45 with Picture Sleeve and Fan Club Flyer

Capitol 2138 – 1968

"Lady Madonna" was recorded on February 3 & 6, 1968, before the Beatles left for India. Although written primarily by Paul, John contributed to the lyrics, and provided “See how they run”, which appeared in his “I Am The Walrus.” the previous year. Paul’s piano playing was inspired by 1950s rock/blues pianist, Fats Domino. “Lady Madonna” was the last Beatles’ release on the Capitol Records label in the U.S., where it reached Number Four. All subsequent releases, starting with "Hey Jude" in August 1968, were on the Beatles’ Apple label.

"The Inner Light" was written by George, and was the first of his compositions to be featured on a Beatles single. The lyrics are a rendering of the 47th chapter (sometimes titled "Viewing the Distant" in translations) of the Taoist Tao Te Ching. "The Inner Light" spent one week on the Billboard Hot 100 at Number 96, on March 30, 1968.

To generate new Fan Club members and promote the Beatles’ Monthly Magazine, a Beatles’ Fan Club flyer was inserted in the Picture Sleeves of the first released copies of “Lady Madonna.”

This auction if for the Capitol 45 “Lady Madonna,” backed with “The Inner Light.” The Record is in Very Good+ condition, with clean, unblemished labels. The Picture Sleeve is in Very Good+ condition with minor ring wear and some wrinkling. The Fan Club Flyer is in Near Mint condition.
