The Beatles
“Nowhere Man”
“What Goes On”
Capitol 45 with West Coast Picture Sleeve
Capitol 5112 – 1964
"Nowhere Man" was written by John (Paul said he helped "polish off the rough edges"), and appeared in the U.S. on the Yesterday ... and Today album. (In the UK it was on Rubber Soul). It was recorded on October 21 & 22, 1965. "Nowhere Man" is among the very first Beatles' songs to be entirely unrelated to romance or love, and marks one of the first instances of John's philosophically-oriented songwriting.
"What Goes On" was also on the U.S. Yesterday… and Today and the UK Rubber Soul LPs. It is the only song credited to Lennon-McCartney-Starkey. The song was originally written by John, back in the Quarrymen days. It was considered as the follow-up to "Please Please Me” in early 1963. However, the song was not used until 1965 as Ringo's vocal piece for Rubber Soul. According to John, "it was resurrected with a middle eight thrown in, probably with Paul's help" for Rubber Soul. Barry Miles also claimed that Paul and Ringo combined for the middle eight. Ringo contributed to the lyrics, and got his first-ever composing credit on a Beatles song. However, when asked what his contribution was to the song, he jokingly stated, "About five words and I haven't done a thing since." To his chagrin, the first pressings of the single accidentally omitted "Starkey" in the song-writing credit.
This auction is for original Capitol 45 of the Beatles “Nowhere Man” backed with “What Goes On”. The copy does not have Ringo’s writing credit on the label. The record is in Near Mint condition, with clean labels and glossy vinyl. The West Coast Picture Sleeve is in Very Good+ condition, with no writing, ring wear or seam splits. However, there is one very small tear in the middle of the top edge.
