Beatles PROMO ONLY George Harrison 45 and SCARCE Pic Sleeve “The Story Behind This Song”
(This week’s auctions will place a heavy emphasis on scarce US label variations. If you are a labels collector, be sure to have a look at all of them. There are some seldom-seen records for sale this week.)
This sleeve and 45 were only issued to DJ’s in 1976 as an explanation for the writing of “This Song,” which was written as a response for his losing the “My Sweet Lord/ He’s So Fine” court case. It is also the very first record that George appeared on as a solo artist for his new label, “Dark Horse Records.” Previously, he’d only played on or produced other artists for the label, but this one is his first.
Never made available to the public, there were only a very limited amount of these sleeves pressed, which completely differ from the commercially available picture sleeve for the 45. See photos.
I’ve included for Harrison comparison the commercial sleeve, which is NOT part of this auction.
(By the way, has anyone else out there noticed that the opening riff to “This Song” is the exact same riff for “Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch” and “Rescue Me,” which Eric Idle blatantly calls out in the middle section of “This Song?” George just stuck it in their faces with “This Song,” and he got away with it! It reached number 25 in the Hot 100. Too funny!)
Sleeve: Very beautiful VG++. Made in the same fashion as the commercial picture sleeve, these sleeves were very susceptible to ringwear and finger divots. This copy has a minimum of both, looking very close to how it must have appeared when first handed to the DJ in 1976.
Vinyl: MONO/Stereo Promo copy. VG++/NM. This copy is so very close to unplayed-looking. However, under a bright bulb, you will find one or two extremely light needle marks per side. The Stereo label has a round sticker stain, otherwise, the labels are perfect.
Note: All 45’s ship outside of their sleeves in order not to damage the sleeve during shipment. Generic plain, white sleeves and Mylar provided.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Check out my other auctions for more hard-to-find vinyl!
