"Paperback Writer" was written by Paul and released as the A-Side of their eleventh single. The most reliable story of Paul’s inspiration for the song is that his Aunt Lil, tired of seeing him write love songs, challenged him to try something different. The song's lyrics take the form of a letter from an aspiring author to a publisher, as his original handwritten lyrics reveal (the letter begins "Dear Sir or Madam"). At the time, a "paperback" book was considered inferior to a hardcover novel, and the implication in the lyrics is that the writer is a hack, creating a b-grade "potboiler" for mass consumption; the book is described by the author himself as "a dirty story of a dirty man," leading some to believe the subject is actually pornography. "Paperback Writer" was the first UK Beatles single that was not a love song (though "Nowhere Man", which was a single in the U.S, was their first album song released with that distinction).
“Paperback Writer” was recorded on April 13 & 14, 1966, and released in the U.S. on May 30th and in the UK on June 10. It went to Number One in the U.S., UK, West Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Norway.
"Rain," written by John, has been called the Beatles' finest B-Side. “Rain” is especially notable for its heavy sonic presence and backwards vocals, both of which were a hint of things to come on the Revolver LP, which was released two months later.
“Rain” peaked at Number 23 on June 11, 1966. It is one of the Beatles' most critically acclaimed songs, appearing on “Best-Of” lists, including placing at Number 463 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. AcclaimedMusic.net, ranks "Rain" at Number 557 on list of the Top 3000 Songs, the 22nd highest-rated Beatle song on the site.
Notable in "Rain" is Ringo's drumming, which he rates as his best recorded performance. Critics agreed: both Ian MacDonald and Rolling Stone said his drumming was "superb" and Richie Unterberger of Allmusic praised his "creative drum breaks". Paul also plays a complex bassline throughout the recorded performance.
Three promotional films were made for "Rain". These videos, along with other Beatles videos at the time, sparked George Harrison to say during the Beatles Anthology, "So I suppose, in a way, we invented MTV."
This auction if for an original Capitol 45 of “Paperback Writer” backed with “Rain,” with it’s original Picture Sleeve. The Record is in Very Good condition, with clean, unblemished labels and vinyl with typical wear. The Picture Sleeve is in Very Good+ condition without tears, writing or seam splits and minimal wear of any kind.
