Beatles, Please Please Me, B/Y PARLOPHONE LP, 1N/1N
The Beatles, Please Please Me.
UK pressed Parlophone Records mono LP, PMC 1202.1963 later pressed variant, with yellow and black labels, "The Parlophone Co. Ltd." upper case perimeter lettering, "Recording First Published" text, but no "Sold In The UK" text. Large "mono" to front of sleeve.
Matrices:Side One: XEX 421 1N - Side Two: XEX 422 1N.
Mothers:Side One: 12 - Side Two: C15.
Stampers:Side One: RPG - Side Two: RPR.
Vinyl:An unusually clean and bright issue.
Vinyl in very clean condition. Marks around the spindle areas suggests plays, but not excessively so. The centre spindle areas are still crisp and without excessive whitening. Vinyl surfaces have a very high gloss still, and are free of any deep and sounding marks. Visual inspection does reveal a number of superficial scuffs and a few of the lightest and tiniest of wispy and superficial sleeve removal hairlines. There are a few instances of finger marks. On the whole appears carefully played and looked after.
Visually around a VG+, but actual playback is superb throughout. There is no distortion, and the LP, even though a later press, still has that sonorous, rich and punchy mono sound that has never been bettered. There is no underlying background noise or crackle, and there are virtually no ticks. Playback has been tested throughout, and there are just three slightly more noticeable, but still acceptably low level ticks. A couple, one at the fade out of Baby, It's You, with another at the silent band before the next track, and another at the silent band between A Taste Of Honey and There's A Place. Otherwise hard to detect anything but very isolated instances of light and short lived crackle during the silent bands between tracks. Playback of actual tracks is really clean throughout. I don't think I've ever owned a copy of this LP with better playback.
Also note that I have not cleaned or treated the LP in any way (see notes below).
Labels:Labels are clean and undefaced both sides although side one has what appears to be a handling smudge, which is of no great distraction.
Sleeve:Sleeve also in very clean, bright and unmarked condition. Front has a high gloss still, and laminate is complete and unpeeled. There is a spot of air bubbling to the laminate at the juncture with spine, and along bottom edge, but this is not pronounced or obtrusive. Predominantly white rear is still very bright with just a couple of minute areas of browning. Otherwise totally free of marks, inscriptions, stickers etc. Tips and extremities are clean and virtually undamaged, bar the slightest of knocking to tips. Only the bottom right hand tip has any actual wear, and this is a very innocuous touch of whitening. Spine is in excellent shape. Backflaps are undamaged.
Inner Sleeve:Original "Use Emitex" poly lined inner is in excellent and unmarked condition, with just touches of creasing to extremities.
Summary:A really nice copy of this LP which will be tough to upgrade. A big seller in its time, but very few have survived the last 46 years in anything approaching this condition.

A Note On Grading:Note that audio grading is subjective and based on sensitivity of equipment used for playback. In this instance playback has been tested on a vintage Technics Quartz Direct Drive SL1700 MKII turntable with Shure cartridge, Technics SU-C 03 amp and Technics SB-F2 Linear Phase speakers.
Also note that I generally do not clean vinyl unless so noted. Most vinyl will show improved playback quality with your preferred cleaning method, but I leave this to the prospective buyer, as controversy still surrounds the ideal method of cleaning vinyl.
