Description
On the cusp of gold labels.
There was a bit of controversy, over the idea of a third and fourth pressing of " Please,Please Me " this is technically a fourth pressing,as it has no 33 1/3 on labels. However, your only talking weeks between this pressing and the gold label pressings. This album is to be played, not looked at . It sounds so good, you could make a mono needle drop off it . IT'S THAT QUIET ! This one April - Sept. 1963 . However,if you look at the details, this is a very, very early pressing, has same tax code as the first pressing, gold label album. You will clearly see the ZMT tax code ,on a couple of the pictures. I blew it up,so there is no mistaking it. Also,I've heard from someone suggesting I am wrong in respect to stampers. I'm not wrong. They are ML and AL. Until I took the pictures,I thought it just had ZT around spindle hole. However, after I took pix with my phone ( I know, they are terrible pictures ) I saw an M in the middle, above spindle hole. ZMT ... Same as the gold label pressings . Catalog PMC 1202 Parlophone MONO. Side one Matrix XEX 421-N Mother 1/2 ( it's difficult to glean,if this is a 1/2 or a 1 or 2 ,as there apparently was a sub-master. I would think it a 2 mother ? Stamper ML. Side two Matrix 422-N Mother 2 Stamper AL . Stampers are under 50 Later 64-65 ( Have the publishing credits on labels ) pressings, many three letter stampers, meaning anywhere from 100 and upwards ,and I'm being generous at that. The cover is E J Day and has Emitex inner sleeve. True tale of how well this record performs. I put the record on my table. The cueing arm slowly dropped on the vinyl. I couldn't hear anything,on the run in groove. I thought,I must have my preamp set on another function, as there was no sound. Then out of the blue " I Saw Her Standing There " The bass is balls out. This record rocks . This ENTIRE RECORD,BOTH SIDES ARE AS QUIET AS A CD. AUDIBLY this 11 on a 10 scale. IT'S PERFECT ! If your in it for rarity AND sound, you'll never find a better copy. It just blows away any pressing, you've ever heard of Please,Please Me ! Unless of course you have an unplayed 1/G/A etc.on both sides,or pretty much any gold label mono pressing,in pristine condition, that is silent between tracks etc. also cost you $5000.00 as you seldom see them in this condition. Visually on a ten scale 8/10 Has superficial scuffs, and I do mean SUPERFICIAL! The only downside is the " Factory Sample " on side two. There is no way,of getting it off . The sticker is faded a bit,and obviously has nothing to do,with the record,or sound of the record. I just wish it was not there. Both labels are very nice and certainly no burnout/whiteout around spindle holes. The fact that the embossed tax code shows no signs of wear ,speaks volumes ,in respect to condition.. Well taken care of and certainly not played a lot. The cover of course is EJ Day. No seam splits, but does have discoloration on back cover. There is one part on back cover, that didn't print well apparently . That was a manufacturers problem, from what I can see. As cover has clean opening, and no seam splits,I would grade it 7/10 . Review pictures and text under pix with the gold labels . That says much,as to how close this record was to the gold label PPM. They refer to the tax code of the first gold label pressings ( mono and stereo on last pix ) They were either ZT or ZMT ( which this one is ) Given the fact that, for all intents ,it has second mothers and two letter stampers ( both under 50 ) ,I think it safe to say, this is somewhere between a second pressing gold label and third pressing with 33 1/3. Not one click, pop, crackle etc. No sound on run in groove, between tracks and runout groove. DEAD QUIET ALL THE WAY THROUGH BOTH SIDES ! As good as the day it was first purchased in 1963. ( I'll be posting the mono Rubber Soul with ridged label and MT tax code. RAREST of any Rubber Soul ever pressed. Makes the 1/1 loud cut, look common. Which it actually is, anyway. The 4/4 and 5/5 pressings sound the best. The 1/1 distorts and why people pay good money for a 1/1 which sounds inferior and is very common, regardless of what you read ,is a mystery to me. It's all hype and not rare at all ) In closing. I took pictures with an iPhone . I know that doesn't compete with what high end sellers have to show. With that said. Anybody can take a terrible looking record, that is beat to death, and make it appear close to flawless. Your getting the warts and all here. The owner, now has a much better understanding of the value of their collection. As this is an audibly MINT sounding record and a rare bird,as well. Bid accordingly .
