"Sweet Georgia Brown" was written in 1925 by Ben Bernie and Maceo Pinkard (music) and Kenneth Casey (lyrics), and was first recorded on March 19, 1925 by Ben Bernie and his Hotel Roosevelt Orchestra, achieving a five-week stay at Number One. The song is widely known as the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team.
“Sweet Georgia Brown” was covered by the Beatles while they were working as a back-up band for singer Tony Sheridan in Hamburg, Germany I n the early 60s. Two versions exist; the first was recorded on May 24, 1962, using the song’s original lyrics. The second version, recorded June 7, 1962, featured the added verse "in Liverpool she even dares / to criticize the Beatles' hair / with their whole fan-club standing there / oh Sweet Georgia Brown." In June, 1964, "Sweet Georgia Brown" was released as a single in the U.S. when Atco Records purchased the license to issue four Beatles/Sheridan tracks. "Sweet Georgia Brown" was coupled with "Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby," and, sadly, failed miserably with the public.
This auction is for an original Atco 45 of “Sweet Georgia Brown” backed with “Take Some Insurance Out On Me Baby”, with an original Atco sleeve. The Record is in Very Good+ condition, with clean, unblemished labels without writing, stickers or ring wear, and glossy vinyl. The Sleeve is in Very Good+ condition, with just a bit of wrinkling.
