Description
Completely genuine copy of this most famously never listened to album, this copy presents very well. The vinyl on both sides shine brilliantly like a new album, with a very occasional light scuff or two. The machine-stamped "MR" in a circle is present, indicating that this copy is a Monarch Records pressing. This is significant since many bootlegged copies of this album have a very convincing "Bell Sound" insignia, but lack the "Monarch Records" stamp.
The labels are full-gloss, rather than semi-gloss that has a slight gradient to red or green, as some fakes do. They're not flat-textured with a different text font, like the reissue does. They are free of writing, stickers, dirt or wear, and the print is very sharp.
The outer paper sleeve is a rich golden brown, whereas some bootlegs are greenish. The paper sleeve fully extends to cover the entire album cover, whereas the very common reissue from the early 80's stops short of the top. The outer paper sleeve has a one and one quarter inch tear at the seal. It has some light scratching to the right of the oval with John and Yoko's faces. On the back, there is written in the upper left corner, "x" over $2.00. (See photos. They're not that big.)
I tried gently to remove the outer sleeve to see the condition of the cover itself, but it is tight over the cover. So I chose not to risk it. From what I can see, there is some light dirtwear on the cover.
The vinyl plays back with light ticks and pops all the way through both sides. And loud bangs, humpback whale sounds, droning mad scientist sound effects, electronic farts, long passages of "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH," and belches put through reverb and that's just Yoko, but nothing that detracts from what you're already listening to. (Yoko: "FAHH!!" John: "That's right, dear. Spit it out.") Somewhere on Side One, someone hit a right note. Can't believe they didn't catch it and edit it out! And if you drink tea and cue the LP to the beginning of "The Wizard of Oz," you get cotton mouth. Or so I've heard...
Still, this is a collector's item which needs to be in every serious collector's library, simply for its scarcity. And this is a great copy.
