Beatles – VJ 498 – Please Please Me/Ask Me Why
Rare 1963 release – Beatles misspelled as “ THE BEATTLES”
The first Beatles record released in the United States was Please Please Me backed with Ask Me Why. It was on the VeeJay label, was their number VJ-498, and was released in the U.S. in February, 1963. Apparently the folks at Vee-Jay knew very little about their newest act, including how to spell the group’s name. The first pressings of the record, and advertisements promoting the record, all added an extra “T” to the group’s name. Thus, when VJ-498 was released, it was credited to “THE BEATTLES”. Vee-Jay realized their spelling error fairly quickly, and corrected copies were issued beginning in March. However, the spelling error, combined with poor sales, created one of the best known Beatles rarities.
This auction is for a copy of VJ-498 that has some flaws. The Ask Me Why label is VG or better. The Please Please Me label is also nice, with one blemish, which I tried to get in a picture. The bigger problem is with the vinyl. There is a crack in the vinyl, which I also photographed. I fits together nicely and would probably be unnoticeable if it wasn’t pointed out. But, if you want to play this record, my guess is you’re out of luck. I bought this copy for it’s rarity;it would look great in my collection; and I couldn’t afford the one in Near Mint. It would look great in your collection, too.
