Beatles White Album on white vinyl - Vinyl record album treasures

If you are fussy about vinyl and are looking for a disc in excellent condition then read on.

·    All my albums were bought new back when they were released so they are old pressings.

·    My new record ritual works to your benefit – before playing, the record would get cleaned with Discwasher fluid and the brush, then allowed to dry two hours laying flat on a terry towel. Before the first playing I would then use SoundGuard protectant. If you were into vinyl in the 70’s you may have heard of this “space age hard lubricious coating that self-limited to 3 microns thickness”, or so they said. The stuff was said to prevent the inevitable gouging of vinyl from the record grooves as the sylus tracked the groove. No matter how light the tracking force and how well shaped the stylus tip the peaks of the vinyl waveforms would get shaved off and in time the crispness of sound was severely affected. SoundGuard prevented (well, let’s say minimized) this damage. I have a recording with a hard sibilant sound that will still cause a lesser cartridge to mis-track. Without SoundGuard my brother’s copy of the same album has worn enough that the difficult to track sections are now rendered smoother and thus able to be tracked (The Yes Album, All Good People). It’s pretty impressive how good these albums still sound.

·    More ritual - The jacket was slipped into a new vinyl record cover and the date of purchase was written inside the jacket slot. Some records have my name in the jacket, and some also on the album label. I stopped writing my name once I decided to never loan my vinyl.

·    All were played on my manual turntable and maybe a friend’s with an equivalent set-up – never stacked (remember those??). The cheapest cartridge I had in the ‘70’s was a Shure M95ED, and better since then (Apature, Benz, Grado)

·    All my vinyl has been stored on edge – never flat. Always where my equipment is – never in storage or in a musty basement.

So you are bidding on a disc with a low noise floor that has been treated as though I intended to enjoy it for many years, and will give you many years of pleasure. Bid with confidence.

Still, some interesting music is in her collection. I’m keeping her collection of old picture-jacketed punk and Ska 45’s!
