The Beatles – Rubber Soul 1965 –UK 1st pressing -1 (loud cut) on the yellow & black Parlophone labels. PMC 1267 dating to the original release date of 3rd December 1965. Comes in its original 1st issue Garrod & Lofthouse patents pending sleeve.

A truly EXCELLENT copy of this, one of the rarest of all UK 1st pressings, dating to on or around the first day of production.

Of all Rubber Soul matrix variants that were released on or around 1965 this -1 matrix pressing is by far the rarest. Pressed in relatively small numbers, one only has to look at the frequency at which they now appear at auction to realise how scarce they are. This particular copy unlike most is in superb condition and as such is a genuine rarity.

Referred to in Record Collector as the ‘loud cut’ pressing (although this is somewhat misleading) these -1 pressings had a very short production life and for whatever reasons production quickly switched to the more familiar -4 matrix.

As John Lennon once said ‘Rubber Soul’ is when it started to get interesting’. A great album with tracks such as ‘Norwegian Wood’, ‘Michelle’, ‘Girl’, ‘in My Life’ and many more.

The workload of the Beatles in 1965 was enormous. After finishing their 2nd American tour at the end of August 1965 they returned home and under pressure from EMI were compelled to write, record and produce an album in time for the Christmas market.

It’s an indication of their genius; for what they came up with inside those few weeks was the masterpiece – Rubber Soul. Recording finished in November of 1965 and discs were cut on 17th, 19th and 23rd of that month and rushed to the EMI pressing plant in Hayes where production immediately started. The finished article was delivered into the shops on the 3rd December 1965. These -1 matrix pressings are a significant rarity along with the XEX 606-1 copies of Revolver.

Disc

Visual: EXCELLENT+

No significant marks on the vinyl and so rare to find a -1 ‘loud cut’ in such remarkable condition. This disc appears virtually MINT in strong daylight, under an intense halogen light the disc bears some very light whsipy sleeve removal marks and only one or two ultra light handling marks. The disc lies 100% flat on the turntable.

Labels: EXCELLENT

Both labels are free from any writing. All text is unworn. There are a number of spindle trails visible around each centre hole indicating that the record has been played and enjoyed. Side 1 carries the KT tax code.

Audio: EXC+ TO MINT-

Finding decent sounding copies of this ultra rare pressing is no easy task. It is a measure of how rare this record is when most that turn up for auction are well below VG in condition and sound awful. The audio on this record however is superb. Most gaps are silent and tracks such as ‘Norwegian Wood’, ‘Nowhere Man’ and the easily damaged track ’Girl’ grade at MINT-. I did detect some playwear on ‘Michelle’ but all in all there is very little to fault this superb sounding copy. There are no pops or ticks and the record does not jump or stick.

EXCELLENT+ 

A superb example with a beautiful unworn high gloss sheen to the front panel which is entirely free of any thumbnail creasing. There is however some small areas of ’bruising’ to the front panel and some laminate flaking to the opening edge which prevents a near mint grade. The back panel is clean and free from any writing; it still retains much of its original freshness with only the slightest of discolouration and natural ageing. All flipbacks are very healthy and intact. The spine is uncrushed and in pristine condition.
