Beatles-Rel 45 John Lennon 1975 Apple PROMO Ain’t That a Shame, NM!
I can’t test-play vinyl at the minute, so with that said…
The Lennon 45 that never was. It’s also one of the last 45’s from John before he went into his 5-year seclusion, and it never went out.
“Ain’t That a Shame” and “Slippin’ and Slidin’” were two promos from his last album on Apple Records, “Rock and Roll,” but both 45’s were never issued to the public commercially.
Although these 45’s have MONO versions that are fold-down versions from the STEREO mixes, they create slightly different mixes. In this case, the STEREO mix has the horns panned to each side. But with all the instruments brought dead center for MONO, it forces the piano into the spotlight, making for a piano-driven version, which is slightly punchier. The horns still play prominently, but they’re placed behind the piano in the MONO mix, as opposed to the STEREO mix being horn-driven.
Fats would have approved. Or maybe he did…
The MONO mix to this day, has never been issued to the public.
Vinyl: NM/EX. Both sides boast vinyl that looks unplayed. However, Side 2 has a very light manufacturer’s burn mark that doesn’t affect playback in the least. Hard to photograph, but I got it in the photos.
Plates: Z1/Z5. Machine-stamped asterisk in the dead wax makes this copy pressed in Los Angeles.
Labels: NM/EX. Side 1 label looks freshly-printed. Side 2 has some strange bluish-green printing error pattern on the right side. See photo.
Sleeve: EX. Nice Apple sleeve.
Note: All 45’s ship outside of their sleeves in order not to damage the sleeve during shipment. Generic plain, white sleeves and Mylar provided.
**Collectors know that this is among the hardest-to-find Apple promos ever made! If you’ve never seen one in person, take that as an indication that you’re not likely going to get another chance at one for a VERY long time.**
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
