This is the 1st issue on the short lived, single boxed EMI label. Towards the end of 1969 the company re-issued all previous Beatles parlophone albums with this new design. Less than a year later another EMI box was added, above the boxed Parlophone and rather oddly, has remained unchanged to this day. All were available in stereo but only three in mono, of which this is one. By 1969 the dominant format had switched from mono to stereo, largely due to the introduction of the compatible cartridge, which meant that mono record players could play stereo discs without harming the groove. It therefore made sense to buy a stereo copy, ready for when you could afford a stereo system to play it on. Also, the mono variant had been continuously available in the shops since its release in 1967, resulting in a very limited demand for this format in 1969.
Both sides of the disc still have a wonderful, jet black, deep gloss lustre, displaying minimal light lines, moreso on side 2. Touchdown from the stylus is followed by near silent run ins, until the music bursts from the speakers. Audio quality is truly near mint, with no deterioration at all. There is some random, very mild clicking on two or three tracks but this is largely drowned out by the powerful mono mix. The whole album plays through with no jumps or stalls.
The labels are in superb condition, with all text undamaged and vibrant, only displaying light spindle trails, mainly confined to the centre areas.
The cover is in reasonable condition, appropriate for its age, with all text undamaged along the spine. The corners have mild bumps but apart from this, it is in good shape.
The 'patents applied for' plain white inner sleeve is in wonderful condition and apart from general age toning, is near perfect.
The 'cut outs' insert is perfect.
All in all, a fine example of this very rare, mono variant.
